Most wanted shooter: Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3?

Now that Activision has revealed its hand, the table is set for yet another round of "fall's best shooting game." Modern Warfare 3 will undoubtedly win the popularity battle, as it has for the past several years. But can Battlefield 3 put itself in position to win the war?

For PC gamers, the latter already is, says Ars Technica's Ben Kuchera. "The lead platform for Battlefield 3 is the PC, and in fact the player count will be higher on the PC than it is on the console version of the game," he says. Consequently, "Battlefield 3 is the first game in years that had me checking out hardware reviews in order to upgrade my computer before its release. It looks that good..."

Not only that, but Battlefield requires more teamwork than Call of Duty, Kuchera argues. "The PC version will support servers with up to 64 players. That's not a small skirmish anymore, that's a war."

He goes on, "The gameplay is slightly slower, more deliberate, and the more distinct classes combined with vehicular support mean that (Battlefield) is a game that's much more friendly to new players, with many more roles to play in the fight... Teamwork isn't a plus, it's expected."

To be fair, Activision has yet to detail Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer. But it's unlikely the company will stray from the run and gun, smaller teams, and aggressive respawns the series is know for.
