Pick a side. Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 are going to war this year.

In one corner, you have the biggest multiplayer game since Halo. It's an annual event. For some people, it's the only game they buy in a 12 month period. It's fast paced. Over the top. Run and gun. And requires little teamwork. It's made by the largest publisher in the world, Activision. 

That game is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. 

In the other corner, you have a comparable cult favorite. It's sold well in the past, but is no where near as big as the former. Like Dr. Pepper, it thinks slower is better. It requires more teamwork. It likes vehicals, has huge maps, and favors a more realistic military style. It's made by the second largest publisher in the world, Electronic Arts. 

That game is Battlefield 3.

To make things interesting, the latter has been heavily mobilized over the past six months. It features significantly better graphics, particular on PC. It will have dedicated multiplayer servers. And a lot of resources are being dumped into it to give Call of Duty a run for its money.

Battlefield 3 is gaining so much momentum, in fact, a rumor exists that Activision CEO Bobby Kotick was denied the chance to preview the game by EA last week at E3. 

Whatever happens, gamers will undoubtedly win. It's highly likely both will end up being very fun games in their own right. But in a psychological sense, one of these games is going to lose. 

It should be fun to watch.
