Even though it's "more of the same," you'll still play next Call of Duty

September 6th, 2011

Call of Duty hasn't changed much since 2007's seminal Modern Warfare. But does it really need to, asks a new preview of Modern Warfare 3.

"What can you expect from Modern Warfare 3 when it releases later on this year?" writes Beefjack. "More of the same, but don’t take that as a negative just yet. The amount of playtime that the Call of Duty games provide make them well worth the price tag, even if it just an upgrade to the game you’re currently playing. For a game that lasts a year, the cost seems well worth it to me. And ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 is likely to appeal the exact demographic who bought the previous games. That’s a lot of people."

Like it or not, in terms of hours played, Call of Duty is one of the most popular games each year. Probably not as popular as StarCraft, WoW, or even League of Legends. But certainly the most popular shooter.

In many ways, the annual Call of Duty is like the Superbowl of shooter games. A really good one only comes along every few years or so. But you still watch/play it due to its social implications. In other words, playing Call of Duty with Call of Duty friends is probably better than playing something else with no friends.

That said, will you play Modern Warfare 3 this fall because "everyone else is doing it?" Be honest. And would that be such a bad thing, provided it's at least a competent PC experience?

I wasn't ever interested in COD. Just never seemed like my type of shooter. I do know that some of my friends are huge fans of the series. They tell me that the multiplayer is really fun and it's more fun when you play with friends. I'm pretty sure they'll be getting MW3 just because MW2 was great. I don't think playing a game because everyone else is doing it is a bad thing. What that could mean is that it's a great game that everyone wants to get in and see what's so great about it.

Well I still play mw2 because I have yet to find another shooter that i enjoy to hop on play a few games of and hop off. But....

Black ops killed CoD for me big time, unless this game is just that great I will stick with BF3...

I'm not a fan of the series, single player is okay though the multiplayer very repetitive and fun for only a short about of time, it is also filled with rude and immature teenagers. I'll definitely pass on the game.

Anything worth having is worth working hard for.

I've always loved CoD's single player campaigns. The multiplayer has its ups and downs but I'll be getting MW3 for its story

MW1 and MW2 were great games, they just needed patches which IW DID NOT DO. Therefore, it would be foolish to think that they will give any post release support for this game.

I'm renting this game for sure, just for the story. But as for buying... IW and Sledgehammer will really need to prove that they will give support before I buy.

CoD is quite the game. It never changes... and yet people love it. The game emphasizes one-man-army-style gameplay which I honestly don't love. The fact that the PR guy accepts that it is more of the same kind of bothers me. I'd hope they'd make an effort to change it a tiny bit. It seems like CoD and BF3 are in a contest to see who can be a successful game and yet piss off the fans more and more. CoD is winning IMO :)

Not true! They patched the game a few months after the release when people were already annoyed. You can still glitch in the 360 version of MW and hide under the map. Not sure how people do it but I was killed by someone under the terrain. Love all the glitches with people fully ranked with no effort. People calling in tons of care packages for weeks with no instant patch. People having a mini nuked which was the javelin. Oh and the game, despite being developed for multiplayer having issues with full parties getting into the game together. On the bright side, 3-4 months later most of the issues were fixed so MW3 will be a great game in March as a November release.

I will buy the game but Genghis is right, they don't really support the game properly. More importantly they don't test the game properly. Give an open beta so you can have free testers to help release a polished game.

The worst thing that happened to gaming was becoming a huge industry. All it did was create more shit and stifle innovation for follow-up titles.

its for 1 of those reasons why i dont play cod anymore it never changes and playing the same thing over and over is just boring same graphics, weapons, returning maps its just boring

reason #2 hackers paradise this game is one of the worse hacker games I've ever seen you cant play 1 game without someone cheating and making it unfair.

reason #3 stabability when this comes out its so glitchy and buggy this game is rushed for release which is just wrong for any game to be rushed just so the developers can be cheap and make money off it, plus it takes them 6 months just to release a patch that fixes 1 or 2 out of many bugs

in my full honest opinion this game should be banned and removed for the garbage and trash it brings into the gaming world of trash talking kids, hackers, cheap deleopers, and much more

my time has come.

I do have to say COD was fun, but I probably won't get it.

Maybe with my new rig, but probably not.

Do you want to play a game for the social implication or because you are genuinely inspired by the experience.

Not saying that COD isn't inspiring because it very much can be but when "Social Implication" is brought into the equation it sounds as if you are playing the game because we have nothing better to go to.

I've never been a huge fan of Call of Duty. I started Really playing with World at War, and I've played everyone since, because despite not enjoying the game itself that much, it is still fun with a group of friends.

That being said, I would much prefer other shooters, for example, Battlefield 3.

Recently I found the very very distinctive difference between the 2... Call of Duty is a twitch shooter.. very quick reaction times is what it's all about. Where as Battlefield is a Team Based shooter. Working as a team to take objectives.

Each game deserves their own respect in their own genre and I plan on picking up both.

despite all the graphics being the same, i heard fourtwozero that he's gonna tweak the graphics and upgrade IW engine. cod is now becoming more of a team based game because of games where it involves teamwork and skill. I just love how they're throwing as many ideas that battlfield 3 doesn't have. im more over to the online experience so i might as well take mw3 over bf3. bf3 can wait for a year
