Performance boost: Free PC tweaks or hardware upgrade?

October 5th, 2011

Just how much do free PC tweaks boost gaming performance compared to more costly hardware upgrades? Not much, according to a new benchmark published by Lifehacker

Of the free tweaks tested, overclocking your graphics card will net you a performance increase of 9%, followed by a 4% bump when overclocking your processor, Lifehacker found. Closing background apps resulted in a mere .5% increase, while disabling OS visual effects and upgrading graphics card drivers did virtually nothing.

All told, free "soft" tweaks were only capable of boosting performance by 12% when added together, compared with a "holy crap!" 68% performance increase when upgrading your rig with a second $100 card or a single $200 card.

In other words, you get what you pay for.

"In the end, the answer to 'can I increase performance for free?' question is 'not likely'," the benchmark concluded. "If a 12% bump will get you where you want to go, then yes, software tweaks can boost your performance enough to be significant. But if your games aren't playing up to your standards, the only thing you can really do is just buckle down and upgrade."

Of course, this is just one benchmark. And results obviously vary by game. But it confirms that overclocking is still your best free bet, but overhauling your hardware, especially your graphics card, is more than worth the cash.

"did virtual nothing" in the second paragraph should read "did virtually nothing"

Other than that, another good write up, Blake (if I am correct in assuming that you still write these).

I believe any increase is better than no increase for the price of free. You definitely get what you pay for though :(

overclocking is the best tweak, even though I've only oc'd my card 50 mhz i hardly notice anything.

You still need pay for good hardware to get performance boost. Try overclock the pentium 4 cpu see if it can beat sandy bridge or Ivy bridge.

Lol. I was going to overclock my old Sony... But, I figured that if I did my computer would melt... It's so old.

Between " tweaking " systems at BIOS level ,using programs like process explorer to " kill " useless things in the background that eat CPU time and software tweaks to set what doesn't load on boot, the alternative of just adding what ever is the max ram the MOBO could take was the most effective to get things to run at decent frame rates on all my old PCs. It also helped alot to get the fastest possible CPU pre-installed.

When you don't have the cash the (up to) 12% increase is great until you can afford the better hardware.

I agree. Until you get the cash to spend to upgrade your rig soft tweaks are where it's at.

New Hardware (granted you know what you're doing) >>>>>>>>>> Software Boosts

Trust me this comes from a guy that used to game on the Mobility x1400 and upgraded to a GTX 560. I'm Soooo Happy now!

Then:
Setting == ultra low
Now:
Setting == ULTRA HIGH!!!

It's actually really funny cuz now that I see what I couldn't before and it's like Oh yeah that would be easier to do if I knew it was there...

Overclocking is just a little boost that you can get.

I'd have to argue one point though. This is obviously on a O/S install as opposed to an OEM machine. The amount of crap on those out of the box definately shows a MUCH larger performance increase.

I've personally taken HPs and Gateways and gotten increases of over 20% (under 20 fps to a solid 30-35 fps in MW2).
