Most overrated PC game? You tell me.
February 29th, 2012
I've been thinking this week about the most overrated PC game. And by overrated I mean overhyped, overstated, whatever. Basically, any game that's the recipient of undue praise or attention.
Most people would argue the top nominations are often good to very good games. They're just not as great, revolutionary, or masterpiece-worthy as fans and critics often say they are.
After thinking about the issue for — oh, maybe 15 minutes — here are two games that come to my mind.
- Bioshock — Before you ready the tar and feathers, hear me out. Bioshock is certainly one of the more original games this generation. The setting, power ups, and moral dilemma of rescuing "little sisters" or harvesting them is enough to solidify this as a very good game; certainly worthy of four out of five stars. But I'm confident in 5-10 years it'll be remembered as, "That was a really good game," instead of "That game is a masterpiece; it changed my life."
- The Sims — Get this: At 150 million copies sold, The Sims is the fourth best-selling video game franchise in the world and the best-selling PC game ever. Following that logic, that makes The Sims "better" than both Tetris and Grand Theft Auto, and that's just wrong. A highly accessible and fun game this definitely is. But most deserving of PC sales title? I'm not so sure.
But that's just me. When thinking of overrated PC games, what comes to your mind? Don't forget to state your reasons.

Nah, I think the Big Daddys will be recognised by gamers for a couple more decades...
And why is nothing COD in that list? For all of the hype and excitement surrounding those games at launch time you'd think that George Lucas had just released a new Star Wars film... and almost every time without fail the new games get an average "meh" rating.

The Sims is over-hyped as well but it does reach a broader audience than many other games. I know people whose girlfriends didn't really play any games but they played Sims.

Sims isn't necessarily overrated. I'd agree with you had I not played the game or played it only momentarily, but when you get sucked into that you stay stay there for a good period of time. If I felt like it actually had "hype", like to the extent CoD or any other blockbuster title, I'd agree with you but it doesn't. People are going to purchase it regardless of what its rating is because it is somewhat addictive and entertaining and regardless of it not being marketed as the game of the year and whatnot.

It got so hyped up as the successor to Oblivion and I feel like they took a lot of what made Oblivion fun out of it.
It's just a bunch of "run here, get this, run back" quests and pure boring skill grind :/

Wow.... just wow. You're comparing an entire franchise that took a lot more ingenuity, coding, art style, and storyboarding to make, to more or less a single game that isn't much more complicated than Tic Tac Toe. Grand Theft Auto and The Sims are incredibly different games as well; I'm not going to bash either franchise, but to say that one or the other is 'better' is not thought out well with the differences in genres alone.
