Buying a gaming rig? Don't overlook these factors

July 5th, 2012

PC World this week published a list of 10 factors for choosing a gaming PC. Overall, the article covers a variety of issues you need to consider before deciding on a rig.

The obvious ones you probably already know: Budget, CPU, graphics card, memory, hard drive. More technical factors include cooling, motherboards, and effecient power. What I really like, however, was the inclusion of "what do you play?"

You see, that may be the most important factor of all. Since each gamer enjoys different games, the demands their rig will need to meet will vary.

That said, the list missed one key ingredient in my opinion: Form factor. Even before you set a budget, you need to consider laptop, desktop, or the recently released settop option. That's a big deal when choosing a gaming PC that best suits your environment.

That said, what factors are most important to you when deciding on a rig?

I already have my Alienware and all I had to upgrade for it was the RAM, but other than that I'm covered. That said, it's a pretty good article. When someone asks me what to get for a gaming PC, I never overlook the "what do you wanna play on it?" factor. If they wanna do FPS, more ram and a better GPU are priorities.

This is a really cool article. First off though, I keep the budget in mind first. I will probably not be buying a new PC anytime soon though. Lol I love my Alienware M17x R3.

Love my M17Rx3! That being said, while keeping a budget in mind I think the 3 most important factors in buying a gaming rig are the CPU, video card, and RAM in that order. If you have a crap CPU your rig is gonna suck no matter what. But a good CPU won't be able to kick out the graphics without a good video card, which in turn needs a good amount of RAM to push it. Not to mention, it's almost impossible to replace the video cards and CPU's in most storebought laptops =P

SSD's are amazing when playing, also most of the good games are 3D ready and they look pretty good, of course to have the 3D system you have to get good components...

If it's a laptop, always portability, power and cooling but I consider about everything which accounts for my generalization.
Desktop, if given the opportunity, always long life time and the best I can afford in terms of cooling and parts.

Using efficient power vs effecient power.

Also the it must play new 3D games on at least medium settings.
