Cross platform multiplayer is a wonderful thing
January 21st, 2011
My favorite PC developer just got better. Valve Corporation this week unveiled cross platform multiplayer for PC, Mac, and PS3 owners of Portal 2, releasing this April. The more the merrier, I say.
What that means is you can play and save your game across any of those three platforms. PS3 owners will even be able to download PC and Mac versions for free. Unfortunately for mouse and keyboard fans, the adverse is not true. But it is a start. And only a matter of time before all Valve versions play nice with each other.
It's unclear why Xbox 360 owners will be unable to join the cross platform party. But I suspect it has something to do with Xbox Live fees, PS3 exclusivity, or all of the above.
Either way, imagine how cool this would be: "Good game. What system you playing on?" "PC," comes the replay. "Cool, I'm on PS3."
Of course, we'll own them consoles players with faster mouse and keyboard controls. But whatever. :)
