Despite recent news, Steam still king of PC games

The battle for digital PC games is heating up. 

Online game rental company GameFly this week is reportedly putting the finishing touches on a deal to acquire Direct2Drive, the second largest digital PC game service. Last month, game retailer GameStop purchased Impulse, the third-largest digital PC game service.

It's great news for anyone who favors digital over retail, and anyone who might consider renting PC games before buying them. But for me, the new developments only underscore the following: Steam still reigns supreme.

It's owned and operated by Valve, one of the most respectable names in PC gaming. It serves an estimated 70-80% of all PC game downloads. And it has the largest library of digital games, making it a fan favorite.

In that sense, it is the Netflix of video games. It's dominant. And despite what other big-name game companies are doing, Steam seems destined to be king for the foreseeable future.

Am I wrong?

I will always Use steam... the only games i rent are campaign games like dragon age... and I play those kinda games on my xbox.... my pc is for awesome multi player games, wich i buy

Not a massive fan of game downloads, way too overpriced, all you have to do is wait a couple of months and the hard copy will be about half price while the digital download will still be full price, why pay £29.99 for a digital download of Portal 2 when you can buy the hard copy for £27.99 from a high street retailer, why would the digital download be the same price as a hard copy anyway
