Great execution, not innovation, makes video games fun

December 12th, 2011

In addition to playing games, I pride myself on knowing what makes great games great. Like many of you, I perceive innovation — aka new gameplay ideas — in video games as paramount. Good execution is just expected.

But that's not at all the case, says Gamasutra columnist Lewis Pulsipher, who holds a PHD and has studied game design for 50 years.

"The idea that a game is more desirable to play because it is 'innovative' puzzles me immensely," writes Pulsipher. "My view is that what’s important in games is how the mechanics work together, the whole not the parts... The point is to have a game that's enjoyable for a target market to play, not to have a game that is in some way 'new'."

As such, great games are 10% innovation and 90% perspiration, Pulsipher says. To put it another way, every game should have at least one little hook to get gamers to stop playing what they already enjoy (10%); the other 90% should be to ensure the fewest amount of bugs possible so that the new game is not a pain to play.

Adds Pulsipher, "AAA video games cost so much to produce that innovation is very risky. There's innovation in video games nowadays, but only from the indie publishers. Big games are dominated by sequels. All 13 games listed in a recent PC Gamer magazine as “most anticipated” by readers are sequels. All of them."

What do you think: Does the average gamer overstate the importance of innovation in gaming? Is excecution really more important? Or are we all hypocrates for saying one thing ("Innovation!") then doing another (buying lots of sequels)?

If games were merely execution, wouldn't they all just be the same game? Obviously you can't only have innovation or only have execution. Like anything in life, you need the perfect balance between the two. The game has to have both good execution and innovation.

I find that execution shouldn't be too important because usually any type of bugs can be patched up shortly after. Consumers are more interested in innovation, less of execution.

This is a great article! It really makes me think about what I want to play. I think I agree that by keeping 90% the same it generally ensures that we, the players, get to keep playing games we liked. For example, I love BF3 and think its a great addition to the BF series. It added a few things but is essentially just another BF game. That said, I took a jump a year ago and tries a completely new game type for me, minecraft, and I absolutely love it. So I think most of the time similar is good, but some of the time really new is too.

very true, if a game is not complete, so that it serves the innovation?

LOL @ execution. If all the anticipated games are sequels that means that the brand sell and not anything else. Call of Duty in the past few years has been smashing sales records. Filled with bugs and glitches with minimal innovation the game still has a strong cult following (i am not excluded from this). This article seems to put too much praise on the developers, who are forced to over work themselves because of impatient publishers, and not enough credit to whose marketing and branding the product.

What these large titles call innovation I like to refer to ask make-up. Sure the make-up might make a girl look a little bit prettier but in the end it is still the same girl.

Out of curiosity, what big title has dropped lately that has not had any problems with bugs, glitches and online performance for PC and console.

Very interesting... This article makes sense actually. Seeing as if one is trying to incorporate new things into a game it can be risky. (imagine having all games having major glitches like dragons flying backwards but w/ everything)

Well gamers seem to not care as much for what they buy now. Before, you'd carefully select which titles you were going to purchase but hardly anyone seems to compare now a days.

It's true though, we are all just buying sequels. No companies seem to take risks now. It's why I think a lot of gamers are finding love in Indie Games.

interesting, though i have never really thought about which i value more, looking at the games i play i'd say i do tend to value execution more with slight innovation. i enjoy games like COD which no matter which version you have is basically the same but is still enjoyable due to its immense execution (with slight innovation of new weapons/settings). Other games that have been mostly innovative like Mirror's edge i have not been so happy with mostly due to what i felt was a poor execution, so i guess all in all, execution over innovation for the win!

Story, music, emotion, and the use of technology is what sets sequels apart as the game play should be similar, but the story and the game in relation to the player is what should change.

agreed i know its a recent series and the tech didnt change much but the Gears of War series was epic imo the music was memorable the story was fully developed and as for emotion play the part of GOW 2 where dom has to kill his wife that was a pretty sad moment in the series

Very good article. About the part of most anticpated 13 games. I think those are almost always going to go to sequels because the game already has a following of people wanting them. Most new games dont catch steam until after they were already released. Thats just my personal view on that though.

This is true, but innovation sells games quickly. People will buy games because they hear of cool new concepts, but they will continue playing those games due to great execution.

Prefer games that are 90% fun and 10% a way to differentiate them from other games in the game genre. Making all the basics work well is alot better than introducing some new frustrating feature like collecting or leveling though puzzles. Though that does sound fun.

Totally agree with this article.. looking at games like world of warcraft, blizzard invented nothing for the genre, but they polished every details.
Some games dev try to innovate but really fail at trying to insert theses new features in the game.

I agree with what the article says but, if a sequel doesn't add anything "new" to the series then its doomed to fail.

Yes, innovation is overrated. Game doesn't need that much innovation to be good.

Yep, a game full of bugs is frustrating, and when the "innovating feature" is bugged or not so well implemented, the player doesn't really enjoy it.
Game are nice when they are bug free and well-polished!

Yeah that is pretty true. I mean we all say that we want new stuff, but alot of times we only like new stuff in small increments. I mean I personally hate it when LoL releases a new patch...cuz they always screw something up so that you have to make little adjustments and tweeks all the time.

Most of the time I play the big titles but I do find myself more attracted to the newer game types from the indies and find that some are very good to play. Most of the time it comes down to how long the gamers have to make the product as you get out of something as much as you put in to it. Some big gaming companies just want the next sequel out in time for the holidays or so many months after the other one was released. I do play BF3 haven't played any of the others just purchased this one and have been playing it for awhile now, but like most things patches have become the normal thing to expect in the gaming world.

I think it should be more like 50/50. I don't have the cash to dump on a game that's not new in many ways (*cough* CoD *cough*) so for me, innovation is just as important as execution. If it is just the same game repackaged, why buy it? I am not against sequels, but they have to have at least something fresh and new to get me to buy it over other games.
