Happy Halloween: 5 scary-cheap PC games to play

October 31st, 2012

Next to Thanksgiving, Halloween is my favority holiday of the year. Candy. Little monsters. Costumes. And scares. 

To help you with the latter, you really should check out Steam's Halloween sale if you haven't already. Cheapskate Blog pointed out four great scary games for under $5, and I'll add one more:

  1. BioShock 2. Proof that a game doesn't have to be classified as Halloweeny to be scary as hell at times. 
  2. Dead Space 2. Lights off, speakers up. This game will freak you out (and it plays well too). 
  3. FEAR 3. Interactive horror movie. Check. 
  4. Left 4 Dead 2. Best zombie game ever. 
  5. Amnesia. Most suspensful game I've ever played.

Fear 1 I thought was startling, as well as Doom 3.

Fear 2+3 were pretty meh.

Dead Space was meh as well to me.

Amnesia I have yet to try, but that one actually looks scary in comparison to most "horror" games out.

I love Dead Space 2 but had a hard time getting into Bioshock.

played all of them bioshock 2 was really good imo, dead space 2 was a nice game but played better on a controller for me. fear 3 the series took a nosedive after the first but this one was at least better than the 2nd, left4dead2 fun coop game worth the money, amnesia, creepy as hell and has a ton of custom stories to keep the game interesting

I can't get through amnesia because the guy walks like hes drunk and it gives me motion sickness.

BioShock 2 isn't that scary but there are moments where it's creepy. Does feel Halloweeny. Dead Space 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 are obvious choices. The best choice is definitely Amnesia. It's currently $5 on Steam right now. What a steal. I would replay the game but I don't want to have nightmares!

You should list them in terms of scariness-ranking. Amnesia should be the ideal Halloween title and I also have to agree with Bioshock 2 not really much of a horror game.
Dead Space and Fear are often "last moment up in your face" than scary. Alan Wake is pretty eerie.

the warz and dayz is good ^_^ not sure if it does that u that sort of scary feeling, but sure does get you crazy when the zombie chasing u

Actual people are more scary than zombies imo. You usually can't tell what they are going to do, so you usually just shoot on sight.

From the little I have played Fear 3 it's nothing as scary as others. You could have rather fun Slender it's free.

Through all the differences it is still perfection.
