Have solid state drives given you that extra gaming edge?

May 4th, 2011

Although I still don't own one for my gaming rig (gotta upgrade), solid state drives are wicked fast. The one on my newly acquired work laptop noticeably improves response times, all without the crunching sound that hard drives make.

When applied to gaming, SSDs can boost loading times by 4 percent and framerate by 6 percent, a recent study found. Not a quantum leap. But certainly a competitive difference, enough to "give the gamer the extra edge he or she is seeking," the report found, while improving overall smoothness.

What's more, the performance gap may be widening, says Samsung. "This report was done with one of our older drives (PM800)," a representative told me. "Our current drive (PM810 - pictured) has improved performance, so the metrics in this report would be significantly better if using that drive. However, the basic ideas of the performance benefits of SSDs for gaming would still hold true."

For those who have migrated to solid state drives, have you noticed a performance benefit while gaming?

They're also lighter and quieter. I would like to have one but they're so expensive and provide so little space. I'm hoping in the future they will eventually become more of a commodity.

I use one and im not impressed at all. That extra 6percent you say isnt even noticeable to me. Im actually pretty annoyed i bought one to tell the truth.

Eventually they will become as normal as our disk drives today are, and when that day comes we'll all have fast hard drives! just kidding, they'll figure out some way to make even faster drives by the time SSD's are cheap. Still though, they are definitely faster, just not cost-effective.

I may not have one but I did a hell of a lot research on it to know that it's better. First of all you don't have the needle that moves around searching for data and you also don't have a spinning disk.
SSDs sort of work like a RAM. All the data is reachable at any instant but unlike the RAM it has the ability to store and save the data with no electricity present.
It still has a lot room for improvement but SSDs are a huge! step forward. You just have to wait for the right price ^_^

Nice, what kind of SSD do you have in your work laptop?

Also, does anyone know how Samsung's latest SSDs compare to Intel's?

feel like none of these answers are that adequate... do you really see a difference in loading times? I believe this is more efficient, so does it help drain less battery power for laptops? and what about cpu consumption, does it use less processing power?

A lot of people have them in laptops cause they won't break or start to melfunction. My laptop experiences huge G forces, so I'll need to replace mine HDD with an SSD very soon.

I really want one, but the price has to come down before i get it. I mean $600 for a 250GB. At least that's what it was when i built my M15x a month ago.

I have yet to test any because of the price. Hopefully in a year or 2 they will be a reasonable price for casual computer users. Although, if I had the money I would definitely get one.

I purchased a 64G SDD for my OS and store everything on a 10kRPM WD. I can tell you that there was a considerable increase in load times for windows and normal windows functions. I would say windows loads probably 60-70% faster than when I had it on a standard HDD. I have yet to try it on a game but i am willing to bet that games will load considerably faster as well.

Also it helps keep the power consumption and heat/noise down in my CPU Case.

you build a new computer and don't plan on budgeting for an ssd? that's no excuse. i have 4 ssd's in stripe mode on an areca 1220 raid card. there are insanely short load times! for online gaming? only lag is the internet connection. no wait on loading.

intel q9550s @ 3.8 ghz
8 gigs of ram ddr3 1666
4 ocz 30gb vertex ssd's
areca arc-1220 raid card
gigabyte GA-EP45T-USB3P
gtx 460
viewsonic 28" screen..

it's a nice setup. super fast with those ssd's!
