Is Rift a worthy alternative to WoW?
June 2nd, 2011
Rift obviously hasn't reinvented the MMO. But having been called a mix of Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, and Age of Conan, it's certainly refined it.
The question is, how does it compare to the stickiness of WoW -- you know, the game we've been playing for, um, 6-7 years now? Three months since its release, how does Rift match up, in your opinion?

I've enjoyed wow so I want to make sure people who never played it understand its a GREAT game. For someone new to mmos may have a harder time getting into it as I did back in 2004 since the lower areas are rather under populated with a majority of the players in the more hardcore areas... common for games that have been around for 5+ years.
If your looking for something really different consider dofus (www.dofus.com). Its a 2d (yes 2d) turn based fighting mmo in the spirit of FF tactics. With 11 million players worldwide dofus has been the #1 French mmo for many years.
What took me away from wow to play dofus really is the guild wars. In this game you can plant a NPC from your guild that "taxes" XP and drops from the area. Then you can collect all the loot yourself for free.... Now what makes this interesting is other guilds (or single players) can attack your perc and collect all the loot. Guilds get very touchie when players start killing off there percs and before you know it you have a FULL TILT guild war.
The players are VERY hardcore and often take the IN game fight so serious it can often extend to real life where people track you down for some out of game harrassing and trash talking too.
With in server politics and guilds one straw away from distorting each other with in game spies and double crosses the game has allot more to offer then leveling up and dungeon runs.
The leveling is interesting too, this game since launch goes to level 200 and takes years. In fact to get from level 199 to level 200 you have to repeat every single xp point from level 1-199.... AGAIN it really can take YEARS.
Also since the fighting is turn based people often sub 2,3,4,5,6+ clients to make "teams" they play themselves. This makes the mmo feel almost more like a rts.
Anyway while I play allot of mmos off and on (examples: wow, warhammer, flyff and others) The French game dofus really is for me.

As good as Rift is compared to most MMOs they need to add more things outside the game to be as competitive not only to all the other mmos, but to all online games that players would play instead.

I like you comment apart from trion hasnt been around the same amount of time blizzard has, havent go the fan base yet, so of course there going to be more player supportive but i bet, when they/if reach the same fame blizzard have they will milk just as much ;)

I sure hope not. Only time will tell, but Trion seems different. Blizzard started out milking for money. As I recall, the paid server transfers for WoW started in late Vanilla. I would argue that TBC is when the game reached the huge fan base that it has. Trion does have the advantage of age: their game is newer and they know what to do and what not do. I would hope that even if they hit the critical mass of players that WoW has, they will not milk their fanbase. Thus far, Trion has not shown itself to be very greedy. They could have easily charged $5 for the server transfers (much less than WoW), and they would have gotten mild reactions, but they decided to make the transfers 100% free. Moreover, players directly asked Trion for certain features (LFG tool in particular), and Trion immediately answered. The size of the community has part to do with this (WoW's community is always split in some way), but Trion seems to want to make the best decisions they can for their player bases. Blizzard... just gives WoW players revamped dungeons, and a new boring daily quest hub (who asked for these in the first place?). I hope that Trion will keep up what they are doing now... once again, though, only time will tell.
