Publishers no longer dictate what games you get. You do.

July 18th, 2012

The promise of Kickstarter gaming keeps getting better. Although still to early to tell what kind of legacy it will leave, on the surface, it appears gamers may finally be able to largely bypass publishers for the games the market still isn't supplying.

Early this year, Tim Schaffer landed more than $2 million in crowd funding for a PC adventure game, which publishers had previously rejected to fund. All told, Schaffer and his team raised $3.3 million and hope to release the game later this year.

There are other recent successes as well. It's hard not to get excited about the upcoming Wastland 2, "the godfather of post-apocalyptic RPGs."

Or Ouya, the PC gamer's living room console. You know, an open one that can be moded, hacked, and it will sell for less than $100. A tantalizing supplement to the bigger games you already enjoy on your rig. In just 10 days, the thing raised $5 million from fans, fans who want their consoles to be something different. Not closed boxes.

Then there are projects like Clandenstine. Instead of starting with the game, they are doing a video series and if people like the series they will make a pc game. Vetting the cultural universe first, before developing a more costly game.

Whatever your take on Kickstarter, it's a great new way to get PC games the community wants developed. And it doesn't come at the expense of traditional PC gaming, which was and has always been open, even as it heads to new places

I think kickstarters are a fantastic idea. It gives gamers a sense of involvement and control over what they get to play. Also the Ouya seems like a good idea but the console market is hard to muscle your way into.

I was skeptical when Kickstarter first appeared. I didn't think it would get the attention it needed to make many large projects happen. I'm really glad I was proven wrong.

Kickstarter is really one awesome thing. Specially the way they do them with the amount of money you give the better rewards you get. That way you can really see how many people want the game and you see they're all counting on you! Whoever created it had a really good idea on his mind.

Through all the differences it is still perfection.

Kickstarter is a great way to get a project going. It is really cool that inde developers are going this route and giving gamers games that they really are looking forward to.

Kickstarters, indies, and massive titles are what makes the gaming world. If only corporate went away from being public companies and back to private so they actually have control over what they produce. Boards of directors, retarded MBA's, and answering to stockholders is only going to have them keep producing cookie cutter games along with an MMO to put the nails in once reputable IPs.

I like what Kickstarter does. They do try to cater to their audience. I can't wait for Wasteland 2 to come out as well as other games that are being funded by Kickstarter.

I am really impressed with some of the funding these projects are getting. I guess if every pitches in a bug or two that is alot of money though. Hope that they bring us some good games.

So awesome that development companies may soon have a choice whether to go to a big publisher or to use kickstarter to have the fans help support the project. I used to work at Atari (publisher) and boy did they rip apart a lot of game development companies projects. By the time we lost some titles to another publisher and the game was eventually released, I didn't even recognize it anymore!

This is the first time I've heard anything about this. This is great! Just because a large company doesn't think something will work, doesn't mean the public shouldn't get to have a say. This allows the public to have that say.

The one thing I've always wondered about kickstarter was, what happens if you post something fake on it just to scam money or something.

An outstanding idea. It's good to see someone out there is attempting to pull away from the .inc's and corps. This will do a lot of good for the gaming community if it picks up a lot of headway. It's also good to see someone is poking the big company's in the eye and saying "We will make what the people want, not what you think will make the most money".
