Kinect for PC gaming: Nothing to see here

Microsoft announced this week that it would be porting Kinect from Xbox to PC next month. But given the lack of supported games and relevant applications, the news means little to PC gaming.

Two reasons why:

  1. Kinect on Xbox has few commendable games.Two years after its release, and Dance Central, Once Upon a Monster, and maybe a quickie with Kinect Sports is all you get. That's fewer than the already limited gameplay application of Wii. So as a net-gaming gain for PC, Kinect doesn't offer much, especially when understanding that the few recommendable games it does have are better served as lean-back, living room experiences anyways.
  2. Kinect on PC isn't targeting gaming at all. Or so implies Microsoft's official Kinect for Windows site. But even if it were targeting games, the $249 asking price is prohibitive to say the least, especially in this Steam age of "get your PC games super cheap with a little bit of patience and planning."

That's just me though: What do you think of Kinect coming to PC next month?

It's a cool idea but as said the games that it is compatible with do nothing for me and at that price there needs to be a lot more to offer

People have been hacking Kinects for a while now, microsoft wants to cash in on it. College students have set up a kinect to a PC and designed a movement based OS kinda like the one in Minority Report.

ya microsoft made this because of how much the pc community have been moding and what they have been doing with them with this version it will be easier for those people to just hook up and use while not requiring any kind of hacking

I can imagine standing up in front of a PC, not in your comfy chair, doing some weird $h!T xD I dont like the idea that PC is turning into a console! xO

I've already got a Kinect to use on my PC. It is fun to code for, but the code I write will never really get anywhere unless it helps the blind in some way :) It is a fun toy, but the windows kinect is absolutely horribly priced and its target audience is not for gamers. Just come up with a new name or brand name that markets itself towards coders: the actual target audience. I don't understand the price rise... I can buy the xbox kinect and the adapter for much less than what the windows kinect is going for.

Its neat that you can use technology like this, and as others have said, use it in a non gaming context. However I would never consider using it for gaming. Period.

Why bother spending a greater amount of money for access to something you can already do with the kinect. User made 'hacks' on the pc have been being made since the kinect was released, I don't see a point in buying a 'pc' version of the same hardware for no extra features.

I doubt there will be any good kinect games coming out for the pc. The best games would be the ones out now, when somebody mods the kinect for Skyrim or FPS title.

Ehh, I have it for Xbox, and it seems to be a bit wonky right now, and requires a fair amount of distance to register participants correctly. Unless the homebrew games become more responsive than the developer material, I wouldnt invest in the windows version.

Wait...$250 for the exact same hardware that already exists on 360 for $150 with a game? No, thank you. Hacks are the way to go in this case.

Kinect has alot of applications besides gaming, and there are already alot of people that have taken the coding packages to work with the software. There are alot of cool programs people have come up with using the Kinect. So I see alot of promise with the move to PC. (Especially if you imploy 2-3 Kinect Cameras --> 3D Imaging)

I think it's great. Technology is evolving who knows what this will bring. At least you will be able to control your PC via voice. Maybe it will have retnal sensors that will move the camera on FPS towards what your eye looks at. Ya ppl don't knock it. cuz you just never know..
