Losing touch with an "Unreal" friend

January 25th, 2012

Have you ever lost touch with a cool online multiplayer friend? I have. Here's my story.

As a fellow gamer, my neighbor buddy let me borrow Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition. I was a late bloomer to the game but quickly caught on.

After 10 minutes of play, I was hooked by the fast paced experience. And the mods. Oh, the mods! Not only was the game well balanced and fun to play, it was dripping with user-generated creativity (remember the toy soldier bathroom mod?).

Anyways, late one night (I was a night owl back then), I was playing and me and this guy would always end up as the last or second to last man standing after a raucous deathmatch. I'd win. Then he'd win. Sometimes a third-party would steal a victory, but for the most part, we would traded first and second.

It was obvious we were equally matched, which in the case of online multiplayer games, is the pinnacle of what you hope for. Close matches. Riveting gameplay. Emphatic finishes. All made possible by an arch rival.

But more than being an arch rival for me, Brett694 (I'm guessing that was his handle) was a cool dude, not a douche like a lot of other insecure players you find online. He was friendly. Confident. Fun to talk to. And witty. For what seemed like several months, we'd schedule and play together at least twice a week.

One night at the scheduled time, Brett didn't show. The next scheduled date, I couldn't make it after something came up.

Problem was, we hadn't set up subsequent meeting times or traded emails or cell phone numbers. And back then kids, there was no MyBook or FaceSpace, if you know what I mean.

In a futile act, I would jump online at our usual time and play for a while, hoping he'd come around. He never did. Knowing only his first name, I tried Googeling his handle but came up empty. After a while, I played the game less frequently, and my play schedule changed as well.

It's been 10 years since I last played Brett. In that time I've started a family, played a lot of great games, eaten a lot of good food, made a lot of new friends, furthered my career, seen some cool places, and have tried to live large as best I can.

But I have yet to find a multiplayer friend as well matched as him.

Brett, wherever you are, game on buddy. If I ever find you in the afterlife, I'm gonna frag you good!

Have you ever lost touch with a fellow gamer?

Where has he been lately? I don't think he has been on in about 2 weeks (at least on this site). I lost touch with many of the people I used to play WoW, FF XI and Anarchy Online with. I guess I could find a good amount through Facebook if I tried but that just seems rather creepy to me.

I've made many good friends online, whom I played with for many years. However, after playing together almost every night, as schedules change every night turned into every other night, which turned into once a week and so on. Sadly, I have not stayed in touch with all the friends I made throughout my busier gaming days as a kid, but there are a few that I still talk to on a regular basis and know better than some of my my closest friends.

Everything must move on, but it would be nice to reunite with my friends of old, whom I would spend countless hours unto the break of dawn having a good laugh, and a fun game.

He's been banned for 2 months.

This sad story reminds me of Diesel. If Diesel was not banned, I think he would post his story about losing a gaming friend. However, I will not discuss it without his permission.

Regardless, it's a shame that things like this happen. They happen all the time too. I used to be a huge RuneScape player. I met someone in which we were similar levels and talked a lot. We ended up grinding together and just having great conversations. It was a close connection and it really made the game way more fun. Unfortunately, time elapsed. That person stopped playing. So did I. Just life responsibilities. I never saw that person again. Quite a shame.

This was around four (4) years ago... I used to play Runescape... Yes Runescape. And I would always meet up with this one guy "moocowdevil". We would play for around an hour a night each of us winning a duel every other time. Over the course of a year, we fell apart... I haven't heard of or talked to that kid in almost four years now. They were fun times, though.

It always sucks when you lose hold of someone that's really good at games, but it happens.

I've had it happen to me a number of times, an IRL friend that stopped talking to me, a couple of guild members who ran into an incident in Afghanistan and just people I've met over a couple of games.

Nothing ever meant more to me then the friends I lost from my WoW guild, we played lots of games together and we were basically flawless, if they weren't around with me since 2003 through 2008 then I don't think I'd have gotten as far in gaming as I am today.

Anything worth having is worth working hard for.

Happened to me as well 4 years ago.
Wasn't until I asked one of his friends I occasionally saw that he committed suicide.

Crazy how someone you only know 2 dimensionally can have such a great and profound impact on your life regardless of never truly meeting them.

There was a time when in the sunny days of my gaming youth, I got into Runescape (the very first year it was out; back when no one had faces and just about all of the textures were solid colours...) there some random guy who just came up to me and gave me 30'000 gold, for no reason. Over the next year this guy and I braved the wilderness several times;whenever I died, he'd make sure my stuff wasn't taken, and vice versa.
I stopped playing before he did but it was a pretty awesome virtual friendship! I almost miss Runescape because of that guy!

I don't think fragging a long lost buddy is too appealing. lol jk, but anyways back then I used to have tons of friends on Maplestory then I got banned for hacking then on I played less and less and eventually stopped. Oh, and starcraft 1 too. I had some of the most generous people help me make maps lol. It was amazing. Starcraft 1 community was so great, nowadays all I see is cussing lol. Anyways what happened to diesel o.o

Yes...one of my friends that I met for the LoL Battlegrounds pretty much quit after our team went 0-5, and so did the rest of the team. The leader was the only guy that really had any experience in LoL and was comparable if not better than myself. He just recently started playing again after like 3 months.
