Man plays Civilization for 10 years, looks into the future

June 13th, 2012

A British man who goes by the pseudonym Lycerius has reportedly played Civilization II for 10 straight years, just to see what a simulated future might look like. The result?

"The world is a hellish nightmare of suffering and devastation," he said. "Roughly 90% of the world's population has died either from nuclear annihilation, or famine caused by the global warming that has left absolutely zero arable land to farm."

Not only that, but almost 2,000 simulated years later, the world is deadlocked in constant war by three powers: The Celts, The Vikings, and The Americans.

Coincidentally, Reddit readers who popularizd the story were quick to note the similarities to George Orwell's 1984, in which the fictional Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia are also locked in eternal war.

Why would anyone spend so much time on a single game? "I thought that it might be interesting to see just how far into the future I could get and see what the ramifications would be," Lycerius responded. "Naturally I play other games and have a life, but I often return to this game when I'm not doing anything and carry on."

For the record, if you really want to know what the future might look like, read Aldous Huxley's dystopian interpretation. I think it's more spot on than Orwell's, which demands more work than necessary in oppressing people (whereas Huxley's subjects willingly drug themselves into submission and apathy -- more here).

I've seen it on Reddit yesterday, didn't think much of the guy other than that he had too much time to waste.

Why are you guys insulting him. He played it for 10 years, not straight though. He played other games and he had a life. Civilization 2 is probably his favorite game. Some of the content in article is contradicting.

I couldn't possibly play a game for 10 straight years... That is very interesting though.

My attention span for a single game only goes so far...lol. Pretty cool he stuck with it to see what happened instead of giving up half way and never reaching his goal.

Of course there are going to be wars at the end. Those games were built on strife. Unlike the newer version of the game, conquest was the main way to conquer the globe.

Playing 1 game or 1000 games in the span of 10 years is pretty much the same thing isn't it? You are still playing a game or games. People can spend their leisure time how they want.

Poor guy.. just to realise what we all know...

He could speed the game up, so: 2000 years into 20days for example...

Maybe someone told him, that may be the reason he quit so soon. What do you know - he may have wanted to go for 20...

What a ganksta, making reference to Huxley's book.

10 years is a lot of time to play a video game, let alone one game hahah.

Its a game, ofc there would be war and nuclear destruction or no one would play it. Doesn't mean its in any way applicable to real life.
