Nothing to see here: Mouse and keyboard alive and well

August 10th, 2011

Despite the recent influx of motion and gesture alternatives, the mouse and keyboard are still the go-to input device for computing mortals. In fact, annual sales are near their all-time high, a new report by The Atlantic found.

"People are buying more mice and keyboards today than in years past," says Rory Dooley, senior vice president of devices at Logitech, one of the worlds largest manufacturers of computer accessories. "The interface was developed to allow people to create content, and it is still the best interface today for that purpose."

Which explains why companies like Logitech are selling almost as much as the all-time high in 2008, this despite the recent surge in popularity of Wiis, iPhones, Kinects, and iPads.

In other news, long live PC gaming. And mods. And all things creative... made possible by mice and QWERTY.

it'd kinda be like changing towers to automatic dryers after a shower...

Just because more people are using tablets and touchscreen doesnt mean they do not use a keyboard and mouse.

The keyboards are extremely important to a gamer, and to have one that he is confortable with can make all the difference. That "in my observation" is why the keyboard industry is still strong, probably the same idea for the mouse aswell.

Most def. The only thing that will change this era would be a fully interactive gaming module which integrates the Xbox Kinect, Sony Playstation's Eye technology, and a 3D interface which can or could be used as goggles or "room" as in the movie Gamer. This will ultimately effect the gaming community for the positive, yet this is far fetched in the future and not anytime soon.

I don't see how you can actually get rid of the keyboard and mouse for good. It will be forever! Long live the keyboard, the mouse......and Alienware!!

I can only guess it will be some time before a decent replacement for the keyboard and mouse, touchscreens are useless even at clicking links never mind trying to type. There is something to be said for a physical controller, be it a joystick, joypad, keyboard, mouse, and I would say that they all have their places, joysticks seem easier for flight simulators, steering wheels seem easier for driving games, but all games can be played using a keyboard. I suppose the rise of ps move, wii remote, xbox kinect have the possibility to replace the mouse as they can be quicker and more direct at 'point and click' operations, but it's still easier to type using a physical keyboard. Who knows what someone will come up with in the next few years, but untill then I quess we will stick with the old faithfull keyboard and mouse combo

Physical controllers really are superior for gaming, and that isn't going to change until the games change first. Or you can just run around and go LARPing

With new innovations to various gaming mice, mx518 etc, I'm not surprised to see an increase in computer input utilities.
Even if there are greater breakthrough in computer accessories, I would resume to prefer with the old fashion mice and keyboard.

Well, Alienware understands the QWERTY keyboard thing, why dont most dumb ass phone comanys. Hay Alienware can you make a phone with a slide out QWERTY keyboard? Most phone comanys are being a-holes and are not anymore... damn I hate touch screens. Thx,
PS, o yea you can base it off the PDA from DOOM3 just make a slide out somewhere on it.

I can't see the mouse and keyboard being replaced anytime soon. The games that use touch screen or motion caption are still in their infancy. As these games become more advanced then they might take away from the dominance of the mouse and keyboard. Maybe in a decade or two this will change but I doubt it will happen within the next decade.

I guess it's the kinda sensation that people get from physically touching something like a book from some shop that you can smell and read the pages and not some e-book crap that you have on a kindle. Or, it can also be going to blockbuster for a movie and renting it and touching the case and other sh$t. You can't do that with netflix. It's nostalgic! What I was thinking is that all the consoles should get a mouse and a keyboard! I know it sounds crazy but, you will be able to press more buttons and have better aiming!

Not only QWERTY, I had a keyboard that was supposedly faster 10x but, I was too used to QWERTY to be able to type 10x faster. :D
