PC gaming taken for granted, but always there

August 17th, 2010

Every so often, some video game rag poses the same, tired question: "Is PC gaming dead?" In fact, this attention-grabbing discussion has been regurgitated and shared numerous times since the '90s by "who knows how many" people. Thanks to a pair of repeats, this month is no different.

"Is PC gaming dead?" asks Game Theory in straightforward fashion. "Thriving or dying," debate the always perceptive readers of the Gaming Age forums. Unsurprisingly, the answer is always the same: "Not what it used to be but still big." Like Microsoft.

The following reader comment, however, hits the nail on the head: "The PC is biding its time. After all, generations mean nothing to the PC. When we were all small and playing NES, there was the PC. When games became cool on the PlayStation, there was the PC. When games stopped being cool on the Wii, there was the PC. When current consoles become silicon tombstones, there will be the PC. There will always be the PC."

Not only does the above accurately chronicle the annals of PC gaming when compared to consoles, it explains how the platform dominates sales on occasion, before quietly returning to the shadows.

So instead of asking "if," why not ask "why"? Why isn't the PC what it used to be? And what would it take to reclaim the gaming throne, provided that's something players want it to do? It has its pros. How would you correct the cons?

The only con I see is DRM of the Ubisoft type. Gaming mags and sites will keep wondering whether PC gaming is dying because they will have a new generation of consoles to hype. If PC gaming had a company throwing huge amounts of money behind it to promote it, it would have claimed the top spot easily. I don't really care about media games though, I love PC gaming and I've been hearing about it's death for more than 20 years. It's nonsense, simple as that.

PC Gaming isn't at its peak because companies are releasing more system specific console games than they used to. Halo, for instance, eventually came out on the PC, but it was at long last. There are still some games coming out for multi platform, but either they aren't as good, or they're being beat out by other console specific games. I think this issue of Thriving or Dying might be solved if there were more PC specific games. MMORPGS and MOBA games that are mainly only for PC, are helping, thus keeping people on the PC and the main reason why I don't own a system since most of these are either F2P or good enough to P2P. However, the choice games for either console or PC are different enough in style that PC gamers are a seperate variety than console. I like having a keyboard that I can map the different controls wherever I want them to be; wheras my friend even uses an XBOX controller for most computer games since he likes the feel of it more.

i think the main thing that hurt the pc world is when graphics on consoles compaired or even past pc for a short while in time and alot of good games out there are made by the same people who make the consoles so people would rather play those games on consoles then when a great game comes out on lets say 360 and pc since they always us there 360 for games they will want to buy it on 360 and another thing i thought of is how majority of the time local multiplayer is extreammly difficult on pc! BUT i do hope the pc world somday rises above all and stays atop were it should be . but anyway thats just my opinion dont get me wrong i own all the consles and handhelds :/

Step aside i have damage to inflict and egos the break!

PC with good specifications is very important when you are addicted to games. I can't wait for the games to be released. - BrandStar Entertainment

I don't think that PC gaming will ever be dead. Of course, you can play small games like Jewel Quest on your phone or on a tablet but when it comes to massive games that use a lot of controls, PC's are the way to go. Consoles just don't offer the same computing power and versatility in control as PC's. I will always remain a PC gamer as I use it for my work too.
