Remember 12-bit PC games?

July 2nd, 2012

In the late 80's, my friends and I would refer to superior looking PC games as "12-bit." Rumblings of 16-bit graphics were already in the air, and we were familiar with 8-bit graphics. So even though our dated rigs weren't capable of 16-bit games, they certainly played games that looked and sounded better than our NESs.

So we called the best-looking ones 12-bit. Childish? Yes. Nonsense? Of course. But it was the only way our naive minds could process the graphical, audio, and performance difference of early home PC games with early home console games. So we referred to them as 12-bit games.

Years later, after playing Doom for the first time, I remember thinking like this: "This isn't 16 bit! This is like 24-bit. OMG!!!" (Note: We didn't say "OMG" back then, but you get the idea.)

For those of you who remember, how was your usage of "bits" when referring to game graphics?

People said "Oh my God" back then!

I still remember playing Wolfenstein. I don't think I really used the term "bits" when I was younger.

How many bits was Jazz Jack rabbit? That was one awesome game and the gameplay was great. I tried playing it a month ago but the controls seemed unbearable.

I remember those days.My brothers and I used to bug our parents for a new console or handheld everytime one with more bits came out.

I would not have imagined that things would be as good as they are now. I remember when Crusin USA came out in the arcades and the graphics looked really amazing back then. I seen it the other day at the local pizza place and man does that came look horrible now.

Well, I don't know how many bits Atari's Lynx operated with, but it was my favorite handheld gaming system ever! I remember playing games like Slime World, Rygar and Toki all damn day, and lovin it. I'd still play those games if I had a Lynx presently =(

Never really called them anything. For DOS I remember being amazed at xwing/tiefighter/etc.

For SNES I remember being surprised at the graphics of Chrono Trigger in comparison to FF2(5) and FF3(6).

Mine might have been Duck Hunt and many are forgetting it's not the graphics that count but how difficult the games were back then. Those were in fact, what I called them, the elders of difficulty.
