Best video game players throw morals to the wind

October 29th, 2012

Wanna win games like Dishonoured, BioShock and Fallout 3? Be complete jerks and leave your ethics and social norms at the door. Or so says a new study.

Says the Smithsonian, "Andrew Weaver, a researcher who tested people's morality in [moral choice] games, found that people who were the best at said games were also the worst ethically: they made the least “moral” choices, they killed characters to get ahead, and they sabotaged their friends. And they won."

As for any jerky behavior overlapping into real life, the science on that is still incomplete. But Weaver says "things start to get fuzzy" for those that spend too much time in game. In other words, there may be crossover.

I always play the nice guy for the first play through. Then I turn rogue and beat the game the other way. Skyrim for example...

Not to mention that playing the "bad guy" will get you the best powers half the time.

I liked the bad guy story line in Dishonored it was awesome and very sinister at times.

I agree with most here. If the game is worth playing twice then you always have to play through as the "good guy" then later just run through killing all that get in your way.

I can never kill someone who doesn't attack me first or is truly bad in a video game. I can't kill anyone in Fallout(s), Skyrim, Oblivion, or any other non-linear/open world/do what you want games. The exception is the Dark Brotherhood storylines in Oblivion and Skyrim; as well as the Morag Tong in Morrowind but those were justifiable.

Im with spiral on this one,

My first playthrough of a game is me just being a top class hero and enjoy it that way,

My 2nd playthrough I am pretty much a massive d**k because i wanna see how it changes the dynamics of the game

I am trying to do Dishonored without killing anyone but it is getting tedious... I just want to shoot people and run through some parts but that would make it too easy (so I tell myself)!

In most games it is all about killing the most and finishing the game. No need to have morals in a game that is not real and does not result in actual deaths.

Mario killed billions of mushrooms and turtles.

Well let's be honest 75% of people who's behavior is jerky gets better in life with some things.

Through all the differences it is still perfection.

Normally I choose to go the "good" route and then tend to want to see the rest of the games content, then try the "bad". Both are great and gives you more story.

logic is irrelevant in terms of bioshock and being immoral (at least the first one) you may have got less adam for saving the little sisters but every third one you saved tennenbaum gave you a present with adam and new splices thus making being the good guy more beneficial in the long run

LOL at a researcher wasting time doing this. I hope federal grant money wasn't used for this "research". It is debatable who exactly the best is in single player games. How does one distinguish what a top rated player is in these type of games?

I pick the good path first then if the game is worth replaying I try it the other way around.

Hopefully this "very helpful research" wasn't funded.

I've never played a good or bad character, but played myself. I make different decisions based on what I believe is right or wrong. Who I should trust and who I shouldn't. It keeps all my game choices realistic.

Enjoying my new life in California :)
