The most impressive gaming rig I first laid eyes on

December 20th, 2010

I've been playing PC games since my mom first bought an IBM PC Jr in 1985. I am by no means the most experienced PC gamer I know -- far from it in fact -- but you learn a few things after 25 years, including how to identify phenomenal gear.

I first saw the landmark Doom in early 1994, shortly after its release in late 1993. The game was running on min-spec but still-capable hardware, and looked fantastic (as superlative games always do). But it wasn't until later in the year that I truly beheld the power of high-end gaming.

In late 1994, id Software released Hell on Earth, the sequel to the first Doom. My friend's father coincidentally bought the best PC money could by at the time, including a 19" Sony CRT (don't snicker, that was a big deal back then, people). To showcase his purchase, he also bought Doom 2.

OMG.

I had seen great-looking games before, the first Doom very much included. But I had never seen such matrimony of software and hardware until that fateful day in my friends darkened basement. Ear-popping sound card. Colorful monitor with even better blacks. Zero lag. Animation like butter. And hyper-rich resolution.

Since then, I've encountered numerous "monster rigs," most recently last January at Alienware's CES showcase (I'm obligated to say that by contract. Just kidding. We all know Alienware makes killer rigs.) But none have left the same impression on me as Doom 2 plus that unidentified white tower my friend's dad owned.

Granted, you don't have to own the most modern PC to enjoy some of the platform's best games. An M11x will get you "everywhere you want to be." It requires even less to enjoy games like Bejeweled 3, World of Goo, or Robot Unicorn Attack. In the end, you can play PC games "any way you like," as PC Gamer's Logan Decker admonishes.

But man is is something special when the choice is 3200p. It's something special when you know you are playing the best-looking game money can by.

Egotistical? Definitely. Awesome? You bet.

What's the most impressive gaming rig you've ever laid eyes on?

I am about to purchase my first Alienware Machine. I do remember the gaming days with DOOM and DOOM II. I also enjoyed Herectic with no cheat codes.
All I can say to all this new technology...."Awesome mind candy".........

My Favorite Games are the Daggerfall/Elderscrolls Series by what was then called Bethesda Software! DAGGERFALL THE ELDERSCROLLS, then MORROWIND, Then OBLIVION :-) i love RPG Games that let u create your own characters and choose your own race and gender, besides everything else i luv about that series. I only wish i could have a RIG that would let me play the Old Daggerfall Games i could play on M.E & also play the newer games like OBLIVION! The system i have now has Vista and i can not even play the WITCHER on it. i am looking to buy something that will play whatever i want from ALIENWEAR!!! ;-) HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

The first game ever, i played, was around 14 years ago. it was Warcraft I. The first game i played on Console was Duke Nukem (dont know which part) on PS1. . Best games of all times for me are Diablo 2, Elder Scrolls series, Call of Duty (till MW2 came out, after that they've ruined the series, MW2 and BO suck)and Heroes of Might and Magic: Shadow of Death.

I've been playing PC games since pretty much the beginning. Started out with a Vic 20, then went to a dumb terminal, then it was the good old days of loading DOS from 5.25" floppies since we didn't have HDDs.

There's 2 real MONSTER rigs that I had the pleasure of owning in my time though and both were built using some of the most high-end parts available at the time. The first was a 486DX2-66 with 8MB of RAM on a 17" CRT. HOLY CRAP did that thing fly. We got this just as the infamous DooM 1.666 patch hit (I still laugh at the "It's a virus!" warnings from everyone lol).

A few years later I had, what was for 2 weeks, the fastest machine money could buy. 2 weeks before the P3s hit, my Dad put together a P2 450mhz with 256MB or RAM (Back when 64 was more than most people even considered owning), an All-In-Wonder Rage Pro and a 21" CRT (which came in a box the size of an oven lol). Damn did that thing ever make Rogue Squadron 3D look sweet.

Back in 92-93 there was a console called The TurboGrafix 16, my spoiled brat cousin had 1. We laughed at him cause our house had a Sega Genesis (which we thought was sooooooo much better). 6 months later he got a "CD Player" attachment that connected to his turbografix 16....then he said it wasn't a CD player, that games were actually on the Cd's!!!!! WTF!? There was a RPG named Ys, running on this new CD attachment, that played games for crying out loud, was like watchin a movie to me...i had never seen a cut-scene until then....matter of fact, didn't see any again until FFVII. Anywho i thought that console was sooooo sweet...
