Ubisoft still struggling with PC releases

August 18th, 2011

Remember when I said we can't be friends unless you put Ubisoft's From Dust on your radar?

I take it back.

Turns out, the PC version of the game is a "technical mess," according to this report. Poor frame rate, frustrating mouse controls, crashes, and even failure to boot, according to at least one user.

"This is far from the first time Ubisoft has released a subpar PC port," writes Vincent Lynch, an avid PC gamer. "Far Cry 2 for PC suffered from some critical bugs that would corrupt save games or prevent progress in the story, and they were never patched. Rainbow 6: Vegas 2 for PC suffered from such terrible performance and netcode that the game was unplayable, these issues were also not fixed."

Consquently, he says, "It's expected that all the issues plaguing From Dust will largely go unchanged." Furthermore, "Ubisoft's reputation as a PC developer takes a step down after every release, and many gamers have stated their intentions to stop purchasing their games altogether or wait to see what others say first."

Harsh criticism from one of the largest and often creative publishers around.

Of course, Ubisoft isn't the only company to have cut corners on PC development. Still, it's a tough pill to swallow, especially since PC was often the best version of multiplatform games up until last generation.

sigh.. there's no excuse to cut corners when you make a game on the pc. Either stick with production all the way through, or don't bother even porting it cause it won't bee worth playing.

Ubisoft itself has a history of not having enough money to do things, I remember they said that Assassin's Creed was the last thing keeping them running in financial terms. To the point: I don't see Ubisoft making very many quality games anymore, though Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell games are interesting, I don't see why Ubisoft hasn't come up with anything new yet... I just think they spend too much money on games that never sell. (HAWX, Might and Magic, etc).

I think one great way for them to get back on their feet is to start making games that are great for competitive gaming (MOAR Rainbow Six) but also that are bugless. Now, I don't want to sound mean or anything but if they fired whoever is in charge of dealing with all this and got someone with more experience they could become on of the big names in gaming.

Anything worth having is worth working hard for.

They should just make the games for the PC so they can maximize the game's full potential then work on the console version. It's sad to see they are struggling with their games on the PC. I remember taking a break from mid-terms and finals at 4 in the morning and playing with Ghost Recon with the people on my floor in the dorms. Hopefully Future Soldier will not be plagued with problems on the PC, that game looks amazing.

I'm not sure about Ubisoft...They've got some good games, but others are meh.

I'm glad they aren't releasing a load of crap though, at least they care about their quality enough to tell ppl they don't have a good product yet.

And when I think of old good times: "Prince of Persia", "Splinter Cell", etc.. To me it was clear for quite some time, that Ubisoft stoped carrying about PC, almost all there games are only for the console gamers, and then they bring those games to PC. Perfect example is "Assassin's Creed" franchise, which always comes first to consoles and later to PC.

GOD is a Superstition.

As of late, they've been porting games from console to PC. As a PC gamer, I'd rather play games that were made for my console. Developing for consoles apparently makes more money (or so I've read somewhere), so it makes sense as a business decision, but they've stopped designing for PC for the most part. That is just sad :<

I'm about 2/3 of the way through 'From Dust' on my PC and I haven't run into any issues. The controls are a little clunky but I got used to them pretty quickly and have been able to manage.

It sounds like I'm one of the few fortunate ones that are able to play the game without issues. I'm not surprised given Ubi's past, it's unfortunate that a developer CAPABLE of putting out solid games just seems to fall short, often.

Not making money from pc games is an excuse. I accept that the percentages of piracy in pc gaming industry are very high but still there are ways that you can publish a pc game and make money. Having poor ports from console to PC is an indicator of not caring about your customers. And thats shameful at least.
