Lossless Codecs Tutorial

Lossless codecs are useful in video editing because it compresses the video file size, but still keeping the video quality. This tutorial will briefly explain how to install:

Lagarith


Features:
  • Best lossless codec for video editing (source)
  • Supports multi-threading (Fast encoding)
  • Easy to install
What you need: Lagarith is a lot easier to install compared to HuffYUV. Just download the Lagarith installer from here and install it on your computer.


HuffYUV


Features:
  • Fairly good compression
  • Well optimized (Decent encoding speeds)
What you need:
  • ffdshow (you might have this installed, check in your start menu.)
  • huffYUV

Step 1. Installing ffdshow Follow this link and download the correct version of ffdshow. There is a 32-bit and 64-bit version, if your operating system is 64-bit then download the x64 version otherwise download the none-x64 version.

Step 2. Installing HuffYUV Either download the 32-bit version or 64-bit version (if your OS is 64-bit then select the 64-bit version) Then extract the files somewhere and right click "huffyuv.inf" and select "Install"

 

Follow these steps if HuffYUV isn't detected in virtualdub Go to start -> all programs -> ffdshow -> Configuration


Select Codecs from the list on the left. Then look for Huffyuv in the codec list and select libavcodec as the decoder for it and press OK.


Then go to start -> all programs -> ffdshow -> VFW Configuration


Select the Decoder tab at the top. After that you need to select Codecs from the list on the left. Again look for Huffyuv and change it libavcodec.


FFV1


Features:
  • A well balanced codec
  • Provides a good compression and encoding speeds are good
What you need:
  • ffdshow (you might have this installed, check in your start menu.)
Installing ffdshow Follow this link and download the correct version of ffdshow. There is a 32-bit and 64-bit version, if your operating system is 64-bit then download the x64 version otherwise download the none-x64 version. Using FFV1 invirtuldub In the compression dialog select "ffdshow Video Codec" and click Configure. Then a new window pops up, click on the encoder tab and select in the Encoder drop down menu FFV1. After that press OK in both open dialogs.


YULS

Features:
  • Provides the best compression compared to any other lossless codec (source)
What you need: I had problems installing this codec. I had to run the install in windows XP compatibility mode to get it to work. If you want to run it in windows XP compatibility mode then just right click the installer and select "properties" and then click the "compatibility" tab. If you have very little hard drive space then this codec is good for you.

I keep all my important songs under the .flac extension because I love listening to the best quality out there. Of course this comes with a price but if you have a big hard disk drive then you shouldn't worry about much else (maybe sharing). Alice - cfd trading consultant.
