User reviews mixed on Portal 2's value

April 20th, 2011

There's no denying the brilliant gameplay of Portal 2. Like the first game, the puzzles are fantastic, and progressively get more head-scratching as the game wears on.

Not everyone is happy though. Although averaging 95/100 among critics, user reviews rate the game at 74/100. Console users, which are charged $10 more, are even more peeved, rating the game at 67%.

No, the game is not buggy. The central issue revolves around the significant price hike. While the first game sold for $15 on PC, the sequel goes for $50. Furthermore, there's upwards of $80 of immediate downloadable content available, which many take issue with.

"Fun, but incredibly short," wrote Casamere. "Not worth the retail price at all. Should have waited until it went on sale."

Of course, there's a clever and seemingly legal hack, that is if you're okay with reselling games.

What do you think? Did Valve get a little greedy this time? Or are these just whiners voicing inane opinions?

Valve has had so much success with TF2 Store so they decided it would work for something like this too. Although the COOP is fairly short, I'm sure that in the future, developers will be able to make their own COOP maps for many others to play for free and I look forward to the community contributions to this game. I think this game definitely WILL live up to its value. Not necessarily any time soon but with time, they can expand the game. People seem to forget that Valve offers a whole load of free expandable content to their games after years of release. A great example is TF2 and L4D2. Those games have been getting free updates all the time to make the games more fun.

Console users have nothing to complain about. You pay $10 more but you also get the game on PC for free and you get to try out Steam on your console. Mainstream games released nowadays are always around $50+ now anyways so complaining about prices is pointless. No big game publishers sell games less than $50 now anyways. Sure, I definitely believe Valve is getting a huge premium on this game but I think it's worth it in the long run. We'll have to see in due time.

My friends are mixed about it, some saying it is worth it.... others saying it was a let down because they were expecting the game for such a long time.

the time any new content comes out... the price of the game is going to drop by alot... just look at L4D1 and L4D2.. they were fullprice games and drop a few months after in price...

the game itself is amazing... but content/features is lacking.. at best i think the game is worth 30$ atm... yeah there will be patches and stuff.. we will see..

Portal 2 is really good game.. it just its short and you cant really replay it.... it the type of game you maybe can play once... twice at most but your 2nd playthru will be boring and fast as you know what to do...

best way to make up mutliplayer is do something like KZ/Surf which are custom map/mod on CS soruce etc..

just imagine trying to get the best time on the server with like 15 other players you can talk to and show off your hats and skins.. combine portals with surfing.. not even.. you can make full racing maps similar to the test chambers... but like much longer etc

i dont know why valve didnt make it part of the game.. just look at Black Ops.. putting zombie/gungame etc.. and it will let mapper have goal what to design if there already a game mode officially set.. imo that what i think online multiplayer should be for portal...

racing/time lapse etc... it just put more value to the game.. and reason to even have hat and skins... and it quite fun too.. to race or aim for the best time against other players on a server

I'd say that most people who are interested in Portal 2 were fans of the first one, and I don't see why after playing the first one anyone would expect to have a lot more content from the second one. If you want to find more content, there are always community made maps and mods (or if you're handy you can make some custom stuff by yourself).

@Bierno
Why are you comparing Portal 2 to CoD?
Portal isnt a shooting games at all, also just wait abit Valve's just gonna roll out a few free stuff and the community is probably already hard at work making new content right now.

I think it is worth every penny, and I'm proud that I spent the $45 I did for it. I thoroughly enjoyed the singleplayer, and I'm going back right now and listening to the developer commentary. I've also recently started playing co-op with a good friend of mine and it's been a blast.

I think this game was worth the price, but to each his own.

I really want this game. I don't care how short it is and I would pay for the DLC too.

You lost the game!

I agree with with them, it's really fun but short. I wouldn't pay 30 bucks but maybe 30 is fine.

I watched someone beat it (first day it came out) in about four hours. A 55 dollar game, with only four hours of game play? I understand the value could be found in online stuff, but I would buy the game just for the story. It seems really quite expensive for what it is.

While Portal 1 and Portal 2 were both very short the gameplay is fun. While it may not be worth $50 I would say it is worth between $25-$35 for a new game that is so short.

I paid $60 when I could have paid 45, and I don't care. It was awesome and I'm still going through for achievements.

Great game but it's more the definitive Portal edition than a good sequel.

I've been on the fence for Portal 2. A huge number of friends got it and like many, the reviews are mixed on it's value. I think I'm going to hold off and see if Valve does announce future plans with the game or if they are just going to leave it at what it is. I really hope they follow their past history of keeping the games pumped up with new content and features, if so I'll grab it ASAP.

Been there, done that. Let's do it again.

I finished the game in 6 hours and right now it stands at 12 from doing achievements and some co-op. Though you can't forget for the PC there really is other maps you can find that people make like Portal.

This is portal if there was like a multiplayer other than co-op would be like racing to finish maybe capture the flag with a bunch of emancipation grids everywhere and you get like a melee weapon or something and the person with the flag can't use portals, but really what else could you add to a game for multiplayer lot of thinking and work for it to be done.

Explain to me how that justifies it as having "only four hours of game play?"

I'm getting Portal 1 with my laptop. I'll see how much I like it, and if I do I'll buy portal 2!

I've seen some gameplay from some of my subscriptions on youtube and they seem to like it.
