By the numbers: PC gaming giant Valve, Steam

February 14th, 2011

Forbes magazine did a profile on Valve founder and president Gabe Newell last week, in which they liken Steam as the iTunes, Amazon, and Netflix of video games. In case you haven't already processed their dominance, here are some impressive numbers:

  • 30 million Steam accounts
  • Controls half to 70% of the $4 billion market for downloaded PC games
  • At only 250-heads, the company is more profitable than Google or Apple on an employee basis
  • Growing 200% a year, is "tremendously profitable"
  • Revenues "in the upper hundreds of millions"

So that explains where all my Steam purchases go!

I only like purchasing games on Steam. It's just so easy to have everything in one account and their prices are reasonable.

I'm always on steam haha, love the deals that they have too, as well as the pre-order discounts they always do for those who can't wait for cheaper deals on new games.

When steam first came out most of my friends hated it. It was buggy and bundled updates for CS and TFC that significantly changed the game play (teleporters for TFC and Tactical Sheilds for CS).

Since they really have proven its need and are moving it in the right direction.

I love Steam cause they got the digital content idea right. They offer a great update and online community service and their promotions allow gamers to get digital downloads for less than what you would pay for a game in store. I'm now a Steam addict.

Steam is great and I'm glad to know that it will be there to stay for years to come.

When Steam first came out there were a lot of doubters, but now there are only supporters, The deals are great and the fact that it is so easy to have your games online to download makes this application one of the best.

Thera are still a lot of dissenting voices out there. Mainly by players who want to able to resell their bought games and I agree that having to bind a product to your account kind of sucks. It would be really cool if we could "unbind" our games so we can lend them to our friends or even sell them again.
