First-person shooting with a camera instead of a gun

January 5th, 2012

Last fall, a small developer announced plans to release Warco, a game that pits you in the first-person shoes of a video journalist stationed in Africa in search of war stories and footage for cable news.

As a fan of photojournalism — not to mention Beyond Good and Evil — I was encouraged by the announcement. Obviously this won't be as intense as traditional first-person shooter — at least I wouldn't expect it to be. But the novel game mechanic of shooting footage as oppossed to warm bodies intrigues me, even though a release date hasn't been announced.

What do you think: Is this a game you could see yourself playing? If not, what other kinds of objectives would you like to see the first-person genre attempt?

It's a novel idea but I don't think it would be very popular. Sure, it's cool to record things as it's happening but it seems rather disappointing and possibly, morbid, such that you are voluntarily recording terrible things. I guess it would be more "fun" to be doing bad things than simply just record it. I don't see myself really playing this type of game but perhaps when it's released, it will have more tempting features.

I remember seeing when this was first announced. It has an interesting concept, but honestly it still seems a little to close to some shooters. Though you aren't participating in the combat, you are still in a wartime scenario, and too many fps players are just trigger happy kids to get this game too much attention. I think that it could be interesting so long as it gains an interesting story; after all, it already has a pretty unique perspective.

Being completely honest, I can't see this game being much of a success. I mean, where is the fun in taking pictures and videos of a war you can't be involved in? It could be fun to learn more the characters and settings but I can't see a full title game based on taking pictures.

Enjoying my new life in California :)

It's an interesting concept, but as others above me have said I highly doubt that it will do well; it just isn't something that the current generation of gamers would be interested in. (I watched the vid without audio; the computer at work doesn't have speakers or working audio jacks....)

Interesting...I think games should take radical new approaches like this because im absolutely tired of seeing the same type of games coming out over and over.

I would probably try it but I could see it getting old quick but it's hard to say until one has actually played the game. I just don't see anyone really being able to get into it when it's just run here run there tape this oh crap that guy died better go there and get footage.

While I do agree that many developers lack innovation, I would also say that a good game necessitates more than an innovative idea alone. There are many other variables to be considered before the game can be considered a quality product.

It looks like an innovative approach, but it doesn't look very fun. The graphics are kind of dated too.

Maybe it will cater to a niche market. This could be just a stepping stone for the developers who wish to make a name for themselves. I wouldn't play it, but I am sure there would be people out there that would.

It's more of a zoom kinda thing then recording, but still recording has advantage that civil doesn't have to be in the battle for rest of the world to see what's happening (the story context).

Through all the differences it is still perfection.

It's definitely zooming and recording. At the end of the scene, it shows what you recorded in a news-like reporting fashion. I agree with the civilian thing but this isn't real. It's a game which is suppose to be fun. I think it has a great allure to it but once you start playing it, you'd get bored. How long can you stand just recording fighting scenes without actually participating? You can't help them or anything. It's just you watch. Not much more is known of this game so when it does come out, you might be able to do more so we'll just have to wait and see.
