"We have to make games about different stuff," says some dude

July 16th, 2012

Unless changes are made, video games will eventually become niche like comic books have. Or so says nascent developer Chris Hecker.

"Some of us think that games can be the preeminent art and entertainment form of the 21st century, if we don't screw them up like comic books got screwed up with too many superheroes," Hecker recently told Wired by way of PC Gamer. "There are still great comic books," he says, "but they are kind of in a cultural ghetto."

Similarly, Hecker adds, "Go into a game store and you have a choice about killing orcs or guys in armour. It's clear we have to make games about different stuff."

Obviously Hecker is generalizing to prove a piont. But I think he might have one. What do you think: Are game environments and storylines too predictable, staid, and nerdy for their own good?

Some are too predictable but occasionally there will be a game that offers something new.

That is an interesting way of looking at the future of video games. I can see how it can get to that point but with the amazing imaginations of developers there is always something undiscovered that people will love. If all else fails do an awesome restoration of a beloved game like FF7 just by having better graphics, no need to change the story, or another classic (with outdated graphics) and I will be happy to buy it :)

The story is always nice but i might be the only one but i usually play a game at least twice. Once just to try out all the different features and a second time for the story. So the story isn't as important for me.

Gaming has always been trying to reinnovate itself through new IP's and whatnot since its creation. Unfortunately, when multi-billion dollar companies get a hold of proverbial cash cow IP, the milk it for all it is worth, not reinnovating but instead keep the same formula. Two examples would be Modern Warfare and Assassins Creed (the newest title may break the formula but no fingers crossed), or the godfather of it all The Sims. These titles have large budgets and are having releases every 1-2 years (or sims every couple of months) yet if you look at their most recent titles and the first of the series, it is very hard to find a large difference in gameplay. They are lacking the innovation that started their games off with to begin with and are instead focusing on cookie cutter releases.

There is still innovation and it lies in the indie genre. They have the "power" to take huge risks because their games lack a large budget and if it fails, only the small group of people who invested in it will be out of their pockets. Large corporations don't have that luxury, if they take a risk in innovation and it fails, they not only lose their companies investment, they lose stockholders.

Games today are pretty similar to other. We need more innovating games like minecraft recently.

Through all the differences it is still perfection.

The "nerdiness" is what normally creates a franchise's success because in a obvious sense, it creates it's own niche of players and eventually gathers more into their community throughout later titles, deriving from the titles it reproduces or the inspiration it delivers.
The only reason why he believes the games need a change in direction is how our recent shooters are literally aiming for the future...

Well we can see that new in Guild Wars 2 - They finally destroyed traditional MMO-Quest-Run-Grind system. Raid class system should get destroyed too. Adding additional functionallity like Blade&Soul did is great. Non-scripted AI is starting to work better. Finally we start to change the world we move in, in games.

The problem is some people need Long Epic RPG games, others need Instant-Action Shooter, others like puzzle and so on. The thing that works best for popularity now is Fully-Free-to-Play with lots of possabilities to player but NEVER grind + the out-of-box thinking about subject. That's my opinion.

I don't think that's true at all games take on every genre that both books and movies do not just fantasy.

lets look at mmo's. Start out go here get quest. Quest complete kill x monsters come back to me. all the same. Fps all almost cookie cutter w/ no dynamics what so ever. Best ive seen so far is BF3 where you actually have to count for bullet drop. Granted no wind n what not but still bullet drop is nice. Adjust and kill. I'm thinkin there needs to be a video game FOR GAMERS BY GAMERS. Have some of these big industries allow us to give insight onto games.

Either get behind our troops or get in front of them.

This pretty much sums it up. The problem is that people generalize the industry by just looking at the top games selling and being developed by the main publishers. There are many different types of games out there, you just have to look.

If comics are in a cultural ghetto, why is it that movies based on them typically have done well in the past 5-10 years? Video games will have a part in our society as long as we stay as leisure societies. The platform that they are played on might change but they will always be around to entertain us.

Whenever I go into Gamestop, i'm amazed at the variety and differences between many of the games. It has changed so much in the last five years. Wii, Xbox Kinect, and PS3 Move have changed things for the better. I can't believe this developer has such a narrow vision over what's getting put on the shelves these days. Last time I checked, Angry Birds was more popular than World of Warcraft. True MMO pcgamers have been drawn more to WoW than many other's but that's due to the Tolkein~esque trend that has persisted in the MMO market for many years now. It has nothing to do with the entire video game industry, just a niche albeit successful niche. There's plenty of variety if you just open your eyes and take a peek!

Believe it or not, comic books were at the pinnacle of entertainment way back when radio was pretty much out and color tv was on the horizon. For awhile, comics let people escape into a fantasy reality. Then shows like Batman and Superman (b&w versions TBH) propelled that vision onto the screen. That trend continues today and is stronger than ever. Sure comic books are no longer at their pinnacle, but they are still persistent, despite their age. They have even attempted to evolve into the digital age with downloadable comics via smart phones. Video games haven't been around nearly as long, they are still evolving as technology evolves. In a lot of cases, technology evolves because the video game industry demands that it does. This ensures that video games will continue to be a viable source of entertainment for decades to come. They may evolve and change over time, but it is extremely adaptable, just as comic books adapting into movies. Difference with video games is that they drive technology in some ways while comic books rely upon technology in order to adapt

While there are a great many formulaic and repetitive games(franchise games like battlefield, call of duty, all sports games) that are still entertaining, there are also new titles still appearing. They ay be coming less frequently, but that is because big developers follower the money, and unfortunately that tends to lie with the big, endless repetitiveness of the major chain games.

Goodbye
