Sound off: What's the greatest PC tournament game ever?

February 2nd, 2011

The obvious and most popular choices include Quake, StarCraft, Counter-Strike, and Warcraft 3. Of course, recent games like Call of Duty, Left 4 Dead, and Heroes of Newerth have left their mark as well, but they have a long way go before they can be added to the discussion.

Although it never was the biggest, I'll always be partial to Unreal Tournament. I have so many found memories of playing that game, even though admittedly it's probably not as "great" as the aforementioned in a tournament.

What about you? If you were banned to a remote island that just so happened to have power, network access, a room full of rigs, and a single tournament game of choice, what would you bring along? Which one has the most replayability so far?

I like l4d and hon, and i know WOW has some big tournaments...

but PC aside i think halo has it hands down, mainly beacuse of the comunity around it, even non-gamers know about halo mlgs... its what, in my opinon, has made mlgs more know to the non gaming world

on a side note, I would love to see more televised tournaments, kinda like a sport... every sunday you can flip the channel to see the latest MLG Tournament, its kinda like a dream of mine XD

and for FPS: BF2
That would be awesome.

Id go with L4D, CS, and LoL.
Can't think of more at the moment but those would be somewhere near the top for me.

It's a tough call between StarCraft, Quake and Counter-Strike as the three games that pioneered the very concept and have held strong for over a decade.

If I had to give the crown to just one, I'd say StarCraft II right now just because it's so huge currently, whereas Quake and Counter-Strike are declining on old versions. If Valve released a new Counter-Strike that was positively received, I think it could swing back that way.

CS, Quake, Left 4 Dead (just because I played competatively), Call of Duty, and I like League of Legends.

yes that one,the point its not how old is,i think the graphics fit perfect ...its simple yet " serious " cant see any more improved graphics or engine like dismemberment this is counter strike os stile ...any improvement will ruin the game its "pro" as it is, any counter strike player since first version came out can confirm this, plus the fan base don`t care about gaming rigs .just pgl .

Starcraft and CS was always big on tournaments. I probably would prefer watching CS tournaments though because it's more "action" and "fast-paced".

I'm a big fan of the Counter-Strike: Source scene (among others) and know it well, so don't get me wrong. It's a game with great skill and tactical depth and a strong competitive community. However, what I am saying is that it is getting old and the scene is definitely past it's competitive peak now. A new Counter-Strike could revive that.

Halo is the breadwinner on console and its first version came out in 2001. It's now on version 4 and that's kept both the competitive scene active and broader fan base current.

I have read the comments until now, and both sides from igames|Ferguson
and CiobyID are very interesting.
My opinion is with both of you:
1) Counter strike 1.6, as it is being sold today on steam and its older versions, is a age without no age.
Gamers who play this game aren't searching for great visuals nor
a thrilling campaign in it, the fact that its a well based game brings them back.
2)"Valve" have seen the community's dedication to Counter Strike 1.6 even
after the release of Counter Strike: source; the game did bring a lot more
audience to the counter strike field and maybe an updated version for counter strike may help that cause even more. But I think its best that "valve" will keep working on Half-life :P Counter strike 1.6 still has its
fan base.

Now for the main topic, my choice of game for my remote island will be....
Battlefield 2 (if the population on the island will be all of my friends because they're not counter strike players).
If random gamers it will be Counter strike :D
Thanks for the article, I really enjoy reading them and commenting

I'd have to say CS:S, or generally most FPSs (except CoD, ew)
I can stand watching some RTS tournaments... but they can get old fast if there's no action.

I would have to say the Starcraft Tourneys are the best and had many many great players. I met many fantastic players during the first Starcraft Tourney I have entered.

Best Original was Desert Combat (1942 Mod) its what lead me into competing, started some of the first active TWL ladders and what what I saw as original team play.

Bf2 was my second favorite, I've played in 30v30 tournaments with 12 hour battledays and worldwide players to trade off with, it was in a risk type format so map modding and modding the game was a must have..

Got to say I never really got into Counterstrike the game just still has no appeal to me, graphics are crap and always were in comparison to any other shooters I've played, not to mention the economy rounds that put one team at a disadvantage one round after the next, just never saw the fun in the game tbh.

and quake.. well never considered anything that requires jump spamming to be an actual quality game

Yes I do love my BF series and am very opiniated when it comes to other games I consider lower quality.. I like COD series, would have been a great game if not for the number of no skill kill possibilities Ie claymore, kill streaks etc.
