How to fix low completion rate of games?

September 1st, 2011

A new report by CNN suggests only 10% of players finish their games. Lousy. The reason: The aging gamer (who is busier than before), a glut of games, and the rise of multiplayer.

When isolated to dedicated gamers only, that number jumps to an estimated 40-50%, "but it still means more than half of all game content never gets appreciated," the article states.

Granted, things are a little different for PC games, many of which don't have an end (i.e. MMOs, multiplayer-only games, etc). But a lot of great PC games have endings too, and most of you aren't seeing them all.

That said, I find that pathetic completion rate troubling from a design perspective, even though it's on par with my own completion rate and many of yours too, according to a post I wrote last year.

So... Are single-player games really that bad? Have story modes become so predictable that we don't even care to see how they end? And should games be able to hold our attention longer, even to the end?

I don't have the answers, and I believe the above stated reasons play a significant role in poor completion rates. But I also believe some of the blame has to be placed on the medium itself.

What do you think?

I always finish a game to get my money's worth. Single player games aren't bad at all. Many great and legendary games are merely single player which became so influential to popular multiplayer games now. I think most people don't finish the game because they end up playing another game and/or they already spoiled themselves so they decide not to finish it. Games should be able to hold our attention and leave an imprint of the game after finishing it. What good is a game if you play it and then forget all about it in the future? Great games are ones that stick with you throughout life.

The only way to make completion rates higher is to make the game very captivating. If the gameplay is fantastic and the storyline is genuinely well thought out, a gamer will keep on playing it.

However, I do acknowledge that single player only games aren't as popular anymore. With the current trend to multiplayer, it seems that games are only worth getting it if there is additional content in the future.

I always finish a game 100% if I have enough time to do so, it seems like a waste to buy a game just to play the multiplayer if it has a single player campaign because then you'll miss out roughly 50% of the actual game depending on wich game it is of course. Assassin's Creed games for example is based on the story and not the multiplayer.

I must be one of the 10%, I've never played a game I didn't finish in it's entire singleplayer and/or multiplayer aspect. I'm surprised the number is so low.

I finish maybe 20% of my games. If I get bored I just stop and move on to the next new thing. Thats how I know if its a great game is if I actually beat it.

Single player keeps taking a back seat to multiplayer. Singleplayer is rarely ever competitive... If this includes multiplayer games that have singleplayer, it really makes sense. When people talk about CoD, the multiplayer is what they talk about. Single player is only a side distraction for both the players and the developers. The really good single player games are easy to finish, but good-great ones are usually harder to finish. I still have yet to finish Okami, for example. Great single player games are often very long, and some of us just don't have time/want to spend time finishing the games no matter how good they are. Multiplayer games are usually more fun playing against others or with our friends. It is the way the industry is going and this is statistic just isn't surprising.

I think making games grindy, and repetitive contribute to players getting bored, and moving on. If Mass Effect didn't have such an amazing story, I would have quit after doing the first 3 mako missions.

I've had some problems finishing some of the assassins creed games, cuz i was in a dorm and watched multiple people play through them, so I already saw most of the content and didn't really have the time to do it all myself.

I definitely see where this article is coming from. With so many titles out it's hard to play them all unless your job is to play games. I like to think I do a pretty good job of beating the single player campaign of my games before moving onto another. Depends on the game really. I couldn't complete Metro 2033 because of the bugs/glitches I was experiencing but I've beat some games multiple times.

New games are too boring nowadays, no creativity, nothing. I used to finish more games then I do now because most of them start to get repetitive really fast.

Through all the differences it is still perfection.
