Why PC games sometimes lack the spotlight

June 1st, 2010

Despite being the most widely-played video game system in the world — by a long shot — the PC often lacks the spotlight enjoyed by popular consoles. Why is that? "A couple of reasons," says game consultant Adrian Crook.

The first is that PC companies often publicize their products independently from one another, whereas console games benefit from combined advertising efforts. "There is a lot of money and time spent on both the trade and consumer side to justify the huge expense of a console," Crook explains, "meaning first-parties like Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo spend hundreds of millions of dollars in marketing to promote their platforms as high powered gaming machines. Meanwhile, there is no singular first-party entity doing the same for PC."

The nascent PC Gaming Alliance has hopes to change that. But since the launch of the cooperative two years ago, marketing campaigns have, for the most part, remained fragmented, including the lack of a dedicated PC press conference at E3, gaming's biggest trade show.

But the absence of concentrated hype isn't the only reason for the PCs overlooked popularity. Crook says the computer's multipurpose use shoulders some of the blame. "On the consumer side, when you're buying a $400 machine for your living room that has only one purpose (gaming), you need to rationalize the purchase by feeding the hype machine," he says.

"So you'll happily line up to buy the latest Gears of War or Call of Duty because playing it on your 5.1 surround sound and 58" plasma home theatre will: a) be fun; and b) subconsciously help you rationalize the decision of spending so much money on gaming alone. Consoles are the only devices focused on gaming alone (by definition), so it's natural everything else, including PCs, get less spotlight in the gaming world."

What about you, handsome readers: Any other reasons the PC might be overlooked as a viable gaming system? Internet popularity? Work-related reasons? What?

I think a big factor is the parents. Let's face it, people become gamers when they are teenagers. Parents don't know the difference, so they'd rather blop down $299 on an Xbox 360 than nearly $1K on a gaming rig, especially when they also see other basic e-machines computers selling for cheap and have one already for e-mail.

I put on my robe and wizard hat.

PCs are relatively new compared to video game consoles when you think about it. In the beginning of computers, only the "richer" people would be able to own one, that wasn't the case for the gaming consoles, anyone could afford one. I guess it became well known throughout the years and ever since then, people just didn't feel like switching because they were so used to it. I guess another reason is that the gaming industry thinks that the expenses that come with PC gaming will hold people back from playing on the PC, I mean PCs do get really expensive, especially since you have to keep upgrading them every few years. Another problem, which was mentioned here, was the lack of advertisements, they need more presence in the gaming/media industry, and what better way to do that than advertisements. I suggest something in the lines of those old PC vs Mac commercials, except it would be PC gaming vs Console gaming. Just my suggestion...

Sounds like you two have good points. I could never find PC Gamer in recent months. And c'mon guys; you could go for a $700 gaming rig. A decent price during this struggling economy. And these prized machines should be able to do more than just gaming. Computers will always lead on here. (:

The thing is, consoles are made for gaming. That will always keep PCs off the radar in the gaming world. Even if you do buy the best gaming rig out there it will never have the capabilities of a console gaming system. Every aspect of a console gaming system is made to make the gaming experience better; while a PC has many other functions that it has to keep up as well. Also the fact that all of these big title games don't come out on PC until years after the big release date. Everyone gets caught up in the hype and buys it for console and then never even knows that it came out on PC 8 months later. Honestly, I didn't even know Assasins Creed 2 was already on PC. If PCs made more of an effort in the gaming world then I could see it taking off, but gaming is not the priority.

A PC always trumps a console.

But not only parents buy this kind of stuff. I think the main reason is mobility. You cannot bring your PC with you anywhere. cheap web hosts. Cheers!
