Will Microsoft's new PC game store rival Steam?

October 22nd, 2010

Delivering on its promise to announce more PC gaming schtuff this year, Microsoft today unveiled their updated response to the hugely popular Steam. It's called Games For Windows Marketplace (original, I know), and it's replacing the current Games for Windows website that nobody visits on Nov. 15.

Some things to note about the new site:

  1. Unlike Steam, the new Marketplace is a web store. Click, pay, and download, right from your browser. That said, Microsoft will release a seperate client "to manage really really large files that aren’t maybe so easily managed through the web," the company says
  2. It's launching with 100 games; a far cry from Steam's current catalog of 1200 games, but everyone's gotta start somewhere.
  3. Games will be sold in dollars, not those confusing and annoying Microsoft Points. And like Steam, Microsoft promises weekly discounts on games, and a revamped community, including online rankings, etc.

Overall it's great to see a gaming juggernaut get behind the PC in a big way. I'm doubtful Microsoft can catch up to Steam's 30 million head start. Either way though, the message is loud and clear: PC games are growing again. Competition is thickening. That mean's more games for you at lower prices.

Rock on.

Its good to see so many things coming to the PC Gamers finally.  Although I don't think Games For Windows Live will be used by many lol

Nothing can replace steam. Microsoft's system will just be like EA's system. Kinda obsolete. Steam is just too good. Steam has valve behind it. Microsoft is nothing in comparison (in gaming).

What is the point? Microsoft doesn't even really want gaming for the PC to begin with. It wasn't until the news of Steam having 30 plus million active users; which translates to money, did they want to compete against Steam (for the second time). I say Microsoft should go back to competing in consoles. I will stick to Direct 2 Drive and Steam.

The GFWLClient will never rival Steam...I use it just as a hub for Xbox LIVE (I download a free game, sign in to my Xbox LIVE account and now I can send and receive voice and text messages over Xbox LIVE).

Steam is more user friendly . I've purchased 2 games from windows live and is kind of a pain compared to Steam .

When all else fails, read the manual.

Perhaps Microsoft is trying to use its name to make a name to rival such things as Steam. But theyre probably jumping the gun a little quick. Theyll probably have a lot of bugs, and issues at the start. Which may push some consumers over to Steam. Which will put a bigger gap in numbers between Steam and Microsofts Marketspace.
