$2 million PC adventure: Crowdfunded games have arrived
February 21st, 2012
Gamers won big this month, after it was announced this week that Double Fine's Kickstarter adventure game raised more than $2 million in crowdfunding in just 10 days, the first project of any medium (movies, books, everything) to do so.
All told, some 61,000 gamers like you and me donated an average of $33.25 each to make the PC game happen. Double Fine was originally only planning to raise $400,000 in 30 days—$100,000 to cover documentary costs, and $300,000 to pay for development.
"For anyone interested in the inner workings of the game industry, either professionally or as a fan, this project will be a landmark in exploring the art of development," the company says. "For people that just love great games, this is an opportunity to help bring one to fruition."
Either way, fans are getting one (or both) of the following: A really promising documentary on how video games are made and a really great adventure game made by one of the best boutique developers in the industry.
In response to the news, Double Fine founder Tim Schaffer had this to say: "We've always had really passionate and dedicated fans, but I did not expect this kind of financial reward. I really thought that we might make our goal of $400,000 by the end of the 30-day period, but when we hit a million in the first 24 hours we knew that we were on to something really unique."
Whether you like adventure games or not, this is great news if you're a fan of "power to the people" and all that. Or in other words, we don't need no stinky publisher!
What do you think of the news?

Haha! I was thinking the same thing! This had better not be a fluke when they've got $2 million to put toward development!
