Would we still play war games if there was a military draft?

November 16th, 2011

Despite more than a decade of real war, military shooters are the biggest attraction of modern video games. Would that still be the case if Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 were released during an actual military draft, a la Vietnam?

No, says a new essay by Seth Schiesel in the New York Times.

"If there were a draft in this country, video games about war probably wouldn’t be so popular," Shiesel writes. "The fantasy would be less appealing if the reality of killing and dying in combat with other human beings were more imminent for more people."

Not only that, but after a glut of World War II shooters last decade, modern military games are careful not to bring the war too close to home. In other words, no big-budget combat games are set in Iraq or Afghanistan.

"Despite the public’s political exhaustion after a decade of real war, imaginary war remains as popular as ever," the paper writes (i.e. Both Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 will be among the year’s biggest-selling games). "These games give you the chance to play soldier in a fanciful, safe way. Call it the promise of plausible heroism."

What do you think: Would you play as many realistic war games as you do if all of your buddies were being drafted? Would you play as many if they were set in either Iraq or Afghanistan?

I'd still play, the places they're set don't mean anything to me. It may to others but not me.

I know several people in the military who, despite having been in several tours to both Iraq and Afghanistan, love playing the Call of Duty and Battlefield franchise of games. Granted, that's a personal lifestyle choice of theirs and not necessarily a forced thing, it doesn't affect their enjoyment of the game at all, nor does it affect mine.

I may be wrong but, Battlefield 2 had maps in middle east (Gulf of Oman, Karkand though fictional, it is modeled off a middle east city) where you playing against the MEC (Middle East Coalition). Medal of Honor (the last one that came out) was about hunting terrorists in the mountains of middle eastern countries. Those sound like they are entrenched in the current wars that are being fought.

Not to mention games like Command and Conquer Generals and a few expansions that focused on a war with terrorist factions. It's not as big of a title as CoD or BF, but as far as RTS games go, it was a title that held a lot of weight.

Also, if the point of the article is that we only play these games because we don't have to live it, wouldn't that suggest that current soldiers probably would never touch these games? But, there seem like there has been a lot of publicity around armed forced playing these type of games (Americas Army, CoD, BF/BFBC)

I had a friend who was killed in a fire fight in Afghanistan only a month or two ago. But nevertheless, I don't feel any problems with playing games set in the Middle East.

If there were a draft though, I might feel differently. But I can't say for sure.

I think rather than not play, I would play for the fun of it as the real thing wont come close to it and game would be easy way to ease some unneeded stress

.. i think a draft would be neet ... the fear of the draft is because people didnt want to go .. and it was forced... but if people had a mindset that said hey ima do my part now then the draft wouldnt be looked at like it was the black death ..... and i would play the games anyway reguardless the enviroment or the state of the union

I don't think that anyone could answer accurately unless they were in that situation... I for one probably would NOT play those games if I had friends or family out fighting for real.

it would definitely be on a case by case basis. the psychological ramifications that it could have on some people would be far too traumatizing for them to continue playing, however for others it may actually serve as an escape and may even be more fun as it is something they can relate to and be able to play instead of live.

As far as games in the Middle-East, i would love to play some set in Iraq/Afghanistan just as much as anywhere else. I believe an older SOCOM had a middle east setting as well and if i am not mistaken it was produced during a time of war.

As realistic as it can be, a game is still a game. If it's too realistic, you have the choice not to play it. I would play any game despite how terribly similar it is to the real world. We are pushing for games to become closer to reality anyways.

I know tons of buddies in the military who love to play COD and BF3 so I'd have to say I disagree. Then again I'd volunteer before the need for a draft if the world came to that so I might be considered biased?

I would play to relax. But, if there was a draft, seeing as I do not want to join the military ATM, I am not sure if I would.

I would still play them, but no matter what, the line between reality and fiction is very real. No matter how realistic they are, you are not actually killing people or dying. It's just a game, a way to relieve boredom and stress.

And I want to be an developmental engineer in the military, so it would be fun to get to play with some of my stuff in games/mods

its a video game, its not real. It doesn't matter in any moral standards. I think it depends on the war. If the war was being fought on US soil we wouldn't. If it were just a draft it would only affect people who were close to those drafted.

This makes no sense. Soldiers currently in active duty play these games. Veterans of younger generations such as myself play the games. Its no different than when we played war in the backyard with cap guns.
