Would you pay for rented PC game downloads?

January 24th, 2011

Don't want to drop $50 on a PC game before downloading? Direct2Drive, the second most-popular digital game store after Steam, is working on a potential fix.

Dubbed D2D Rentals, the service lets gamers download and play five hours of game for $5. After that, you can either rent the game again, or apply a maximum of $5 towards purchasing the full download.

With only three games available at the moment, this service is obviously a pilot program. But if it works out, it would help alleviate the fear of dumping $30-50 on a downloadable game with no return policy.

Either way, what do you think of the new PC rental service?

I am a subscriber of Gamefly for my Xbox 360. I get to keep the games out for as long as I want and there is a set monthly fee.

I would not pay by-the-hour for a game. That is something I would simply not do. I almost always prefer owning a game to renting it, but when I buy a game I like to either a) know it will be a game I will like or b) play the demo to see if I like it.

I don't think game rentals are the future, but perhaps the future will entail more quality game demos that show off all the great aspects of a game so that a gamer feels confident in his or her purchase.

If actions speak louder than words, why is the pen mightier than the sword?

idk.. if I am to rent a game, I'd much rather spend $5 on a day with the game, rather than only 5 hrs. Not a bad idea, but i think its going to have to do a bit better to catch my interest

I think this is a wonderful idea... at least from the view point of a publisher. From us consumers down here on the other hand, it's just terrible. Charging us for playing what is essentially a demo and thereby forgoing the need of the developer to make an actual (free) demo? I don't think so.

I just hope people will boycott this as much as possible, so publishers won't get the wrong (or from their perspective "right") ideas.

I think this is an overall bad idea that won't really work out. $1 per hour for a game you don't know if you like? I personally play at least 10 hours a day and I really don't feel like paying $10 just to try a game. Perhaps if they cut the price by a half and added a special bonus to each game then I might consider. This is just silly, however. To be honest, I am not a console fan at all, but even the idea of Gamefly is silly. I understand it takes game producers time to make games and all but if you compare video games to movies then it's quite ironic. A movie costs dozens of millions of dollars to make, and a video game costs roughly a million to a dozen million and if you compare prices; movies cost $15 and games $60. Perhaps they should come up with a way to introduce new games to the market that cost less and appeal to a wider amount of players, hence permitting ultra low graphics settings through ultra high graphics interesting the widest amount of people possible. The point I am trying to make is, the way to reach a large audience is to appeal to them through interest; (graphics, cost, modifications, add-ons, and interface/options). Maybe if games were like this then I may consider a program such as this one.

Anything worth having is worth working hard for.

Developers just need to make more Demo's. Renting hours for PC games isn't a good thing.

Why not just make a demo/trial?

I think its a good idea myself...but prices seem a bit steep. A dollar an hour, for 5 hours isn't that much. Like said here...I can rent a game from Gamefly and keep it for as long as I want, and then trade it in for other games. Doesn't cost me a dollar an hour to do that.

I think they just need to do more demos, to pay for what is basically a demo seems absurd.

Truthfully its not a bad idea, especially for multiplayer games, thats if they let you online. because lets not lie, people pirate single player games cause its not worth 60 bucks..

Im pretty good at picking out games I like... I dont think I ever bought a game that I regreted getting, but I have rented games I regrted renting... and with open beta testing getting more popular, you can get a fell for a game befor its even out... also why would i pay when gaming companies already give out free trials and demos, thats the best advertisement and what typically get me to buy a game

This is not good. when i buy a game, i want to play it for a long time, not download it and rent. Steam is better i think, overall the offers. I bought Mafia II for 12 €
