Optimizing Boot Time

Page 1 of 2 1 2
Hi guys, I like to optimize boot time to boot as quick as possible, so I guess I'd just start a thread to share some tips n' trick I knew & everyone else can share their tips n' trick they knew as well!

Tips n' Trick to optimize boot time:

Open "MSCONFIG" (you can find it by search it on windows search menu), and check the tabs "Services" and "Startup", observe it scrupulously, and untick everything that you don't need to run when the windows boot.

Try it by yourself & share your tips n' trick to optimize boot time here, and I'll put your post on the first page!

just my .02
But in end, if your looking for the best of the best, consider investing in SSD technology.

The tips on the link are sound, I always refer here when tuning. Microsoft has so many unnecessary services started by default.

The amount of system RAM will also play a part. All applications run in RAM, of course, so the more RAM you have, the less likely it is that Windows 7 will have to store excess program or document data in the page file on the hard disk, which is a real performance killer.

Turn off the startup splash screen
Reduce or eliminate BIOS checks
Upgrade your device drivers
Configure the prefetcher
Optimise the (existing!) HDD
..
and so forth

What defines you is how you react to disappointments.

Of course, although SSD is a bit pricey at the moment xD

Anyway, thanks for the input mate

a SSD would be the BEST possible scenario for a quick boot. but with a disk drive i would recommend a proportioning your drive, i dont know if this helps, (someone please correct me if im wrong)

When I was using Asus ROG G73, Asus have a specific software called "Asus Fast Boot" designed to optimize your boot time.

What the software really does is that it enables us to configure which software to run on boot up, which not to run on boot up, and which to delay on boot up (load the main softwares first, then load these 'delayed' softwares).

Now, we can set which software to run and which not to run on boot up with msconfig, but the difference is, what if, for example, we want to load anti-virus, but it takes a lot of resource and profoundly decreasing boot time? With software like Asus Fast Boot, we can choose to tell the OS to delay loading the Anti-Virus, and load other softwares instead.

Now my point is, I'm not talking about how wonderful Asus Fast Boot is, but I'm talking about, how wonderful will it be if Alienware has a similar software? I genuinely do hope Alienware will develop & release similar software.

SSD is the best way to help with boot times

going through your system settings will help but not as much as having a dedicated Memory from the SSD

But they can be pricey, But I see SSD's being the standard drive and replacing HDD within the next 5 years. Give or take advancement's in technology

my time has come.

I'd have bought a 10k RPM HDD, if there's any that fits laptops...

I also heard that you should never run defrag on a solid state.
