Current MMO's
Page 1 of 2 1 2
Hey all,
A friend and I recently wanted to get back into some MMO's having some time to kill these holidays.
Its been a while since we went mmo hunting and this is the best we could do.
DC Universe Online
Aion
Requiem
Vindictus
We had played Requiem once upon a time (the name has now changed twice since then) it was a decent game with some interesting aspects but we never got too far.
I just spent two whole days downloading DC Universe Online and was massively disappointed.
Not sure why, maybe its because everyone, every single person is a super hero (or villan) kinda takes the awesomeness out of it.
Also the powers are really bland, they don't seem to show proper data values and the first few fire and ice spells look completely the same/same effect with minor differences.
The movement system is a bit rubbish, theres flight and acrobatics and super speed.
Acrobatics is buggy, you can easily get caught on stuff and makes you look like your "the hulk" even if you have a small body type and it just begins to look odd then.
Anyways, I was hoping some of you guys played Aion before, the new f2p one.
What are your thoughts on it? is it a grind fest?
Are they greedy? (as far as I know my friend and I could not party in DC Universe, apparently "leagues" are premium)
Can you play the entire game f2p and still keep up with everyone else?
Any other good f2p recommendations?
PS: Take my critisim of DC universe with a pinch of salt, i just started playing it and will do so till the end of the week, then ill decide if its worth shoving several hours of my life into.

DCU does get better once you gear up, but only because you will be able to do raids. Once you get raid gear though, the game gets incredibly boring. Updates have been few and far between and for some reason they feel the need to charge for them. DCU can be fun, but it's the McDonalds of MMO gaming.
Yea most of those will keep you busy their are a few other ones that are particularly awesome, but that is a fairly good list.
Sleep and I will steal your gold, Dream and I will steal your soul.

I haven't played AION yet but I tell you what I heard:
IF you do go with the Eu server than there will be differences between paying and non paying players. Note that eu is published by a different company than the NA.
Here is the differences
http://www.aionfreetoplay.com/website/features/;jsessionid=1ecac7c021355396d00e91e64457
And for the NA
http://truly-free.aiononline.com/truly-free/index.php
Everyone one will start in a same playing field, but it be like any other mmorpg with a cash shop. Those that pay will have a advantage towards that don't. But it is possible to go to end game content without having to spend a dime. It will just be harder. And we all experienced that.
And for the overall gameplay, I heard it was a grind fest. But you know it was once subcription base. So it does have a high production value. Also, I heard the story was good. So read the story line.
edit: i do want to play it but dont want to get addicted to mmo again.

Aion is a grindfest, or at least it was, and apparently it has yet to change. Excluding that, there's lots of cosmetic customization, the combat is cool, worlds are well liked and apparently PvP can be extremely good.
I'm not happy with current MMOs as a whole though. Waiting for The Secret World.

The grandaddy of MMos just went free to play today, Everquest. I am in the process of downloading it now and looking forward to playing my 54 Rogue again.
Bit put off from aion now :3
While I dont doubt everquest is a great game, it is a bit dated.
Any other recomendations?

Sorry, no recommendations for f2p games. I just started playing Final Fantasy XIV again though, and am enjoying the improvements they've added.
so your only going for f2p games?
Yeah, not a fan of monthly subscription.

Is FF14 subscription base? I heard that it went buy to play.

Yes it went pay to play at the end of January I believe. It was free to play for over a year until they added in more content and fixed issues that were within the game.
SWTOR and quit it after your free month.
Edit: Also, Spiral Knights (F2P) was fun for a few months: http://store.steampowered.com/app/99900/

There are a lot of F2P MMO's out there just got to look deep. A few recommends.
Raiderz : it's a NEW F2P MMO from Perfect world(I Know there games suck) But this one is not bad at all it's a monster hunter game and kind of fun. Right now it's in alpha with closed here soon after.
Rift : This just got a F2P model. But it's like WoW's only up to 20.
Battleforge : A F2P MMO RTS/Card game. A little bit of everything. It's an RTS with monster summoning onto a field and you summon them with cards. And you can play with people from all over in matches of 1v1, 2v2, 4v4, and 12 player matches.
Theres a lot out there you just got to do some digging :)
