well the only thing keeping it from being a full desktop is it's size, which is one reason why i would never buy an ultra thin laptop there's just too little space for all the hardware so it's more likely to overheat like crazy

It really does not overheat, it stays cool, I messed up by putting it in a contain like place where only a little air could get too, now I have it in the open and it stays cool,

I did put a fan pointed at it so it will stay cool, now it does not even get hot besides the one place that the fan cant hit, but even on that side it still does not heat up as bad as my dads full desktop computer, (not a alienware, but his laptop is)

i just meant that by putting a much more power consuming graphics card into an X51 there's a higher chance of it not necessarily overheating to the point it fries anything but maybe to the point of a clock reduction but ultimately i gotta give the X51 credit for putting out pretty good performance on a smaller model

The X51 might not be the biggest baddest rig out here, but for the size and how it really does, to me, it matches to the Big boys out there lol,

But yea your right about how the power is, it can fry anything if you not carefull,

To me this rig is just for people who dont have big rooms, or they travel alot, also the price is pretty good, It will play your games and as long as it can play any game on really good settings, there is no problem,

Also you never know, Alienware might make another side cover that has a extra fan or 2, and they might get a bigger power box so people can have the beast inside a cage controlling it.

Hell ill buy a Alienware side cover with 1 or 2 extra fans put into it,
as long as the price is decent, besides that if you really want more out of this system, just buy a smaller desktop case and use the side cover of that one and cut out the size to fit another fan into it,

I mean this system has alot of ways to upgrade it, just have to figure out which way will be better.

About 275w with an i7. Easily dropped below 250 with a bit of tweaking. The issue I had with a card that used the same amount of power was blocking the incoming air. Possiibly just going ssd would fix but I never got that far. That card ran fine with the side of the case off.

Maybe if you upgrade the cpu to i7-2600S used 65w then the i7-2600 that used 95w.

Will be upgrading my graphics card in my x51 as soon as there is

A) A graphics card that the x51 can handle (GTX 660,670 Most likely)
B) They make a higher grade external PSU to handle more power hungry cards

Simple logic really, would rather not risk my Alienware box in a hunch that it won't ruin my machine!

dang it would have been amazing if the x51 could manage to stay stable with a 680 in it, it would be such a big selling point

yeah I think this thread have reached its maximum, concluding that if the x51 could handle the 680 would be selling like cold beer in a hot day.

The thing is it can. I currently have my 680 in my 51 and I have spent the last 7ish hours playing Witcher 2 running on High settings. Running at the 80-88C range of temps and a constant 60FPS and stable. The best part was it dosnt sound like a jet taking off.

The only issue I ran into was involving the Super clocking, intially it would kill the system, but after offsetting the gpu clock freq. to match the factory speeds before overclocking it solved the issue.

Just my 2 cents :)

if the 680 one in your's is stable , to post some idle/load temp and power stats

It would really help other x51 users and might turn out to be an anti climax here ;)

Neither does the stock GTX 555 that comes with the system, or the GTX 670 that myself and many others have successfully upgraded our x51's with.

GTX 550, 560 ti, 670 have a power withdraw of 150 and 170 w, but gtx 680 is much more hungry i have talked to some techs insisde Alien Lab, and onde i got a positive answer about the 170w GPUs. It was told that 170w GPUs CAN run inside X51. But they recomend waiting for the GTX 660, that runs at 150w.

I'm looking foward to upgrade my X51.
