I thought I already merited a dollar from my first post! And I was right, wasn't I? It didn't come out May 23rd!

try 4gb:P 6 is you must. You wanna play games, right? First, ivy bridge is not needed. Second, Anything beyond 6GB is a huge overkill.
Save yourself a lot of money and get as little money from dell as possible.
Eirrean...if u answer all of my questions I will paypal gift u a dollar if u have paypal
if i get 16gb right now do i prevent myself from my computer becoming like a dinosaur in 2 years?
M14x will not be able to play games well in 2 years no matter what you do with it. GT650m is a good card, but not the best, not even close.
16GB is useless. You will never ever use more than 8GB. Also go for the cheapest CPU as any i7 will last about 5 years so much much longer than GPU

i only plan to play like D3 and SC2 and D3 expansion...
well, than the cheapest CPU with 4GB RAM is more than enough. I recently played Diablo 3 open beta on my M14x with GT555m, i7 2720 and 4GB RAM. Fluid gameplay in highest possible details in 1920x1080 and 50-60 fps. SC2 doesnt have high requirement either.
6GB RAM is the minimum for current M14x and i'd stick with that. If you even feel the need to upgrade ( i really doubt that) you can do it yourself at a much lower price. It's very easy, takes literally 2 minutes

Even then 8GB of RAM would be useless. Don't fall for Dell's trap of thinking that more is better; more RAM is only useful if you know how to use all of it.
Listen to krishnooof here; in gaming, 4GB of RAM is quite good enough! PERIOD. You don't need 8GB, you don't need 12GB, you sure as hell will never need 16GB! Buy 6GB if you must, but in all seriousness, and I cannot stress this enough, more than 4GB of RAM is not needed!!! In fact, in almost all cases it is completely useless!!!!

Even if you ONLY ever used your machine for gaming, there are many valid reasons for more than a pathetic 4GB.
lets start with the OS. With 16GB you can confidently turn of the page file in Windows. This eliminates the swapping when Windows is forced to use the pagefile due to lack of available memory. this improves sytem performance. If you are tech-savvy, you can even create a ram drive and put the swap file on that for enhanced performance.
Speaking of the OS, every single version of Windows is more bloated and resource hungry than the last...ever notice how cheap ram gets just before a new Windows release? Like now? Win 7 pretty much grabs 2GB at startup and holds on to it for its own use, depending on your total system ram. I expect W8 to run like shit on 4GB.
Multi Tasking..As someone who grew up in the 640k days with DOS memory managers, boot disks, etc, i find it incredibly stupid in this day and age to single task.
I may have a few Word doc's open, some form of music player open, some monitoring programs, a music ripping program, and half a dozen browser windows open, but then I feel like gaming for awhile. Why should I have to shut all that down?? Well, I dont. No need with 16GB, assuming your CPU can handle things (mine can).
Ram becomes obsolete. Look at the price of DDR2 now, especially for laptops. Its double the price of DDR3, so if you have a 3 or 4 year old laptop with only 4GB, you are going to pay dearly if you want to upgrade the ram.
All this is assuming gaming only really. if you use a high end machine for graphics, or transcoding video, or running VM's, etc, 4GB is laughable.
I certainly agree with ordering the minimum from Dell though, as a ram upgrade is exceedingly simple and much cheaper if you do it yourself.
Oh wow Ok i will listen to the above 2 advice and get the basic 12 gb of ram
I hope you guys will help me install more ram if needed in the future...any links to a easy guide that a nont ech person will know how to do?
