GTX 670 Price/Performance King

Well I have been reading a lot of reviews lately on the 670, such as this one. This thing is virtually a GTX680...but it's $100 cheaper. Last year AMD had the bang for the buck covered...but Nvidia seems to have it cornered this year. And we haven't even seen the GTX 660 yet. The way I see it, if AMD wants to continue to have the "Best Bang For The Buck" title they will have to drastically lower their prices soon.

don't get me wrong, the HD7870 by last year's standards is an incredible value. It's (almost) as fast as a GTX580 and you can get one for around $340. But in this year's lineup it will likely have to drop in price also once the GTX660 arrives.

If this trend keeps up and Nvidia offers these levels of performance at these price points then I will be swapping back over to Nvidia.

Haha! That's awesome!
But it makes me wonder... what if Nvidia made the GTX 670 that powerful by accident, not knowing that it would rival the GTX 680, and that's why there are rumours of a recall hovering around...? If that's the case, I'm going to pick one up as fast as I can, haha!

I have heard the rumors of the recall. The rumors speculate that performance is degrading but I have seen nothing that actually backs this up. It could just be hearsay. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. But consider that even if they have a recall, it will only be temporary. There will be a GTX6790 regardless.

Sometimes it happens like that...they design a card for a performance/price point and it runs faster than they anticipated. The problem with that is that usually they have time to test it and then adjust the price accordingly. By all accounts the 670 should be in the $450 to $475 range and the 680 should start at $550. But Nvidia seems to have different plans this year...to take back the crown. Now don't get me wrong...I am both excited and saddened by this. I am still an AMD fan...but I am going to go for the best value.

One other thing i will mention is that there have been some reports of driver issues with the latest Nvidia release and the 670 causing crashes.

When has there not been, with new card releases?

Hahaha...exactly. Most of what I read were isolated cases. Sometimes you can install the same card with the same drivers on two like setups and one will have issues and the other won't.

I won't be upgrading until early next year so maybe they will come down $40 or $50 by then and I'll replace what I have with a pair. For now I am happy.

This reminds me; recently LinusTechTips on YouTube released a video comparing the performance of three-way GTX 670s to a single GTX 690... it impressed me how close the scores were (the 670s were of course the more powerful)

It really seems like Nvidia and AMD flip flop every few years on pricing/quality

Only problem is now just about every GTX 670 on Newegg is sold out!

Not much more, as it happens... I've been doing some research too, and the GTX 670 is just a small overclock away from being a 680, practically! Definitely doesn't justify paying $100 extra to go for a 680, in my opinion!
