Overclocking
Hey (I'm kinda a new guy to PC gaming, I mean I've played plenty of games on a PC but not really that hardcore)
I was wondering if you could put up a Tutorial on the Basics of Overclocking?
I have never overclocked my Laptop before... I have the Alienware M11x and would be very happy to know what new graphics levels I can achieve by doing so..
yet I have been to afraid of failure and frying my computer doing it wrong....
so what I'm saying is that I would like a Tutorial on Overclocking.. so I dont' end up doing it wrong and hurting my baby...
thanks

I would NEVER oc notebooks/laptops. there's just no way they could handle the heat of some serious oc.
Yeah, like Hurricane said, over-clocking laptops and net-books is never a good idea. They get hot enough as is, and over-clocking them would just add to that heat.
If you plan on over-clocking... then you should get a desktop.

Yeah. laptops/notebooks can't handle the heat. the fan is just not strong enough.
What about oc a pc, can we get a tutorial on that?
1Over-clocking for Laptop is one of the best way to damage laptop with HEAT!!!
You could probably do it.. in a fridge :p
No really tho, you'll need some intense cooling system. Most OC'd laptops' fans won't cut it.

Well the alienware M11x does have overclocking feature...
You go into the bios and set it up. (if you have a R1)

If you have a R2 it contains an intel i5 or i7 that automatically overclocks
I don't understand what these guys are talking about. Sure you shouldn't overclock your cheapo netbook but this an Alienware gaming laptop...
This product was designed to be overclocked because CPU on a M11x is an ultra low voltage cpu for energy efficiency and low heat production and is slower than most netbook cpus
So you can easy bump up the performance a little from 1.3ghz to 1.73ghz on your M11x

True, but you wont see a huge jump in performance. So, it's really not worth it unless you're going to push it over at least an extra gig. That's not really recommended for laptops either.
Now, if you own a desktop here is a fairly decent guide. http://lifehacker.com/5580998/a-beginners-guide-to-overclocking-your-intel-processor
Sure, you can overclock your M11x, but I personally wouldn't bother with it. Especially for a .5GHz boost - it's not really worth the possible damage you could cause.
I feel like people here are comparing apples to oranges...
Have you handled a M11x yet???
Have you handled a M11x yet???
um just dont do it
What about a tutorial on OC a desktop, i would be interested in how to do that. :)
Try calling alienware tech support DUHHHH they will give you the answers your looking for.
I think, and I'm sure I didn't say this, but don't remember who I'm borrowing the quote from, but when thinking OverClocking, there is more than can go Wrong than the other way around (meaning that you'll probably turn it into a pile of expensive junk Vs. improving performance to somewhere noticeable).
So I stand by Pathard!

I LOVE my AlienWare M17x-R2, she's called Erika xD

you can overclock you GPU by using a special design software from the brand, and if you mess up just restart... but OC processor mmmm that it way to risky on a laptop.
