Thats a tough question to answer given that you did not provide models to compare.

Being said Alienware is Dell's premier brand offering good quality and customer service. I can tell you personally I have bought PCs from a lot of companys for LAN Gaming Centers and hardware wise Alienware/Dell have had the least amount issues.

Build one. That will be a better computer than either.

i love alienware laptops, i don't think i'd ever buy anything else, but for pc's, i prefer to build my own, its completely your choice what goes in it, what its capable of, what it will look like, and most of all, its pretty fun building it =P

btw it might seem scary at first, but prior to building my first pc, it took me only a month(because i didn't have the money right away when i decided i was gonna build it) of research to learn everything i needed to know to build one, you will learn more as u start using it, if you do decide to build your own, go to newegg

and make sure you read reviews about everything you buy before u buy it

Hi there!
Building your own PC, (which in essence means purchasing parts and then assembling them in a tower) is a sure way to save some dough, but consider your options as a whole. Will you spend less? Of course...you are buying parts. Can you make mistakes doing it? Of course, we're all human. Does it come with a warranty if you accidently put something in wrong and fry it? Nope. Will someone come to your house and replace the part if needed? Nope. You can, however, re-purchase the part and hope that fixes it, while not being sure if you fried something else. Does it come with 24/7 support, deals and discounts for future upgrades and products? Nope...

Look, I am not coming down on building your pc, but I will not just sit idly by on a forum I am involved with that represents Dell and Alienware and listen to a bunch of people come here and promote not supporting Dell and Alienware, but just the opposite. If anyone wants to build your own towers, have at it. But the original poster did not ask about building a pc. He asked about comparisions of pc's from company to company.
Alienware computers are top of the line, cutting edge beasts. If you want extreme gaming performance, you will get it. Remember that when you purchase an Dell computer, you 'build' it in the customization phase. How much it costs depends on the performance you desire and how much your willing to spend. X51 desktops start at 699.00...that is an amazing price for an Alienware desktop! The Aurora R4 starts at around 1,600.00
You do not need to spend three or four thousand dollars on an Alienware PC. I spent 2,450.00 on my Aurora R4, and that included a 21.5" ultra sharp monitor I got with it that was close to 300 dollars. And it is a BEAST. When you customize, you tailor it to your specific needs. I wanted blu-ray and a bit more power in my graphic card, but everything else was pretty much spot on...the savings I would have from building this on my own, (which would not have been the same, the Aurora tower is unique) would have saved me about 300 dollars. Now add on warranty, in house repair if needed, 24/7 customer support, discounts on future purchases and such.. costs about 600.00..hello? Anyone see my point?

Please do not be quick to jump on the 'build it yourself!' band-wagon. Remember, you will always get what you pay for:)

Good luck!

That was a very well written post all the same, you can still reuse it later. These questions tend to pop up frequently. Oh, and there are a few 'build yourself is better cultists' around the AWA. For the most part even they are good guys :-D

Yes, the last thing I want to do is give an impression of 'US VRS THEM' when it comes to building your own rig...hehe
I think there are many valid and good points to building your own. If you do not need all the polish and whistle, so on..but it is those who simply post, 'Build your own. Alienware is over-priced.' Tend to drive me nutty.

You also have to consider that even though Alienware is a gaming brand, the big price tag is primarily due to it's design.

Food for thought: every laptop I owned before my M15x overheated like crazy. My M15x never has (watch it do that now...)

I'd assume the same level of quality applies to the desktops, if not more so.

losing activity as I'm moving away from gaming.

Remember, you can build your own high- end PC, but you cannot get the same elegance as Alienware's!
