It is part of the hardware connecting the fan to the sensor on that paticuliar part, as in CPU or GPU. All computers come with a factory pre-set that determines how much rpm your fans are going to kick up to depending on how much your pc is heating up. You can go in and manually adjust if you find your pc or laptop getting too warm for your comfort. More often than not though, if your unit is getting too hot despite the fans, then it is not an issue of the fans, but either the blow vents being blocked or clogged, or the heat sinks/hardware needing a re-pasting.

I actually do have a real life, I just don't remember what the password to it is...

Gumption37, i'm getting the general idea that you are still having issues with your laptop and the new 6990 you put in. Here's the thing. The 6990 does spit out a fair amount of heat. It will be noticable when gaming. This doesn't necessarily mean that the computer is over-heating. There is a certain threshold to where the fans will start to kick in. Surprisingly enough, on my M18x, this threhold is pretty high.

Can you tell me what kind of idle temps you are getting with your system (CPU and GPU) and then while playing a game (CPU and GPU). Use RealTemp or GPU-Z to check the temps and report back. I was easily getting between 60-75c while playing Diablo 3 (heat was fairly intense, fans were @ 30-40%), and between 52-55c on Battlefield 3 (heat was intense at first then fans kicked it up to 50-60% and temps dropped fast.

If your temps are anything above 80c, i'd be just a bit concerned. 90c+ we have a serious issue!
