After much discussion on here and just from personal experience, Dell & Alienware really need to pull up their socks. After purchasing the Alienware M17X with the 3D screen it became apparent that you could only get the laptop with Nvidia GTX460 and apparently that card just can't really handle running at 1080P and having a decent frame rate.

I also find out that Alienware is now offering the 580M and the Ati 6990, but for some unknown reason which Dell won't specify they aren't compatible, even though right on Nvidias box it says 3D capable??

Due to this I cancelled my order went with the regular 1080P Screen WLED, and went with the Ati 6990, I'm sure I'll be much happier than I would have with the 3D model.

This is the reason I did not get the 3D model as well.... For being a company who advertises to sell the best of the best they are falling behind.... Especially with driver support...

You can now get the 120hz screen with the 580m

i dont really think 3d is all that so i wouldnt get it from the start

That maybe true but you cant get it with a 120hz 3D screen

The 120hz screen is 3D capable, you just have to wait for the drivers to get updated!! It will happen trust me!

But they won't let you buy it in that confifuration, i tried and i tried calling to order as well and the dell agent says i cant order that as it is not compatible

3D is such a bad gimmick! its been around forever and now they bring it back to try and make more money. So unoriginal.

Well I've ordered the m17x-3D with the GTX580m...I'll post my experience when it gets here in 10 days ;)

Even if I have to use after-market video drivers...they're usually better anyway

Yeah, it's really wierd that you can't get the gtx 560 on it with 3d. I thought it supports 3d!

I feel like even with the -d technology available, games won't really be much better-they're still from one perspective and the interaction hardly changes- you'll just strain your eyes out a lot faster.

Is 3D really that good?
imo a lot of the aspects of 3D screens are over rated

I once saw a 3d moving in the theater I took the glasses off halway through cause it seemed no diffrent to me. A guy I know bout the 3DS and well personally that looked like crap to me so I'm glad I never spent the extra on the 3D capability. Waste of money i figure and if it really did look like a mage was throwing a fire ball at you it would prbably cause more damage when you fell off your chair and kicked over you desk and smashed the over priced screen.... Just saying
