To be honest as a Martial Artist I absolutely hate tournaments main reasons why I left my Taekwondo dojo to begin with. should be more about learning the art of the style otherwise go learn boxing and bash each others heads in really its all tournaments show, no disipline and no show for style.
Best example in Iaido for tameshigiri competitions when you cut the mat as long as you cut without doing a mountain cut you pass - judges hardly give a damn if it's down to representing your sword style or not

I agree

I'm what would be considered a black belt in kung-fu (bagua zhang) :P and a green belt in tae kwon do.

May the force be with you...

yep and karate is more like *WHAAAAAA!@!$$!#$%* for just a little block or step

What?!? The Karate I learned, I have a brown belt, is nothing like you make it sound. I was taught to end a fight as quickly as possible and given the tools to do that with. Tools such as learning how to break a mans neck or arm or leg. Learning where nerve bundles are and how to hit them.
I was taught how to move quickly and effectively. I was taught how to use different stances effectively.
Also, the U.S. Marine combat training is very similar, if not the same, to traditional Okinawan Karate, I bet you wouldn't tell a combat trained marine that his fighting style sucks!

Nah Taekwondo also means to strike or break with foot, combination of both but in 1v1 fights you mainly use your foot.

Taekwondo also here btw. I haven't trained in a while actually, after the vacation I'll pick it up.

Well my opinion about this is how can you test your martial arts if you don't go to test with other fighters in a tournament? It keeps you open to the martial arts community and you will always know if there's new moves/styles popping up. But i know people who also don't like competing but there very good. I guess its all up to you. Good boxers are also very disciplined btw.
