Survival Guide – Survival of the Fittest tournament
Please read carefully through this Survival Guide for essential information on the tournament:
Complete Registration
To participate in the tournament your team must have at least 4 players on the roster by Thursday, August 6th. When you have completed this, you will see your team status changed to ‘ready’ on the competitors page.
Only the first 256 teams will be assigned a slot to participate in the tournament.
Rosters
You are permitted to make additions to your team rosters until Sunday, August 16 at midnight Pacific Time, and then on every subsequent Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until August 30 at midnight pacific time.
Please have each member of your team enter their Steam ID in their profile. Your opposing teams may request that this information is accurate prior to starting a match.
All members of your team must be 13 years of age of older, and residents of either the United States or Canada (excluding Quebec).
Scheduling Matches
All fully registered teams will be assigned to a group on Friday, August 7th. At that time matches will be entered into the system such that each team will be scheduled to play a match against each other team in their group.
Each week features a new campaign map. Check the schedule page for details.
Through the website control panel, it is your responsibility to use the match scheduling and contact features to negotiate specific match times with your opponents. You must use the site for this purpose. If your opponents are non-responsive, is it possible that they are no longer competing and you will need to report a forfeit (default) win.
You will be expected to complete your match against your first assigned opponent by Thursday, August 13th. Then from that point on you will be expected to complete two matches per week against your assigned opponents – the deadlines for these matches are each Monday and Thursday.
You can play on any night and time, as long as it is by the deadline day specified for that match. Deadlines ensure that teams remain active and on track throughout the competition.
Servers
Your team should have a dedicated server for match play. Servers must be configured with the latest competition server plug-in which is available on the files page of the event micro-site (http://www.alienwarearena.com/event/l4d-sotf/files/). The server plug-in is required.
If neither your team nor your opponent’s team has a dedicated server, you can contact us at Support to see if we happen to have any servers available. We only have a limited number however, so you take a risk if you choose to rely on these.
Match Client
Download the Match Network Client: http://www.alienwarearena.com/account/client/
When it comes time to play your match (at the time you negotiated with your opponents), all players competing in that match must login to the Match Network Client. You use your site username and password to login to the client software.
The Match Network Client establishes contact between teams through a chat lobby and ensures that everyone is competing fairly.
Please make sure you load up and ready in the Match Network Client prior to loading Left 4 Dead.
If you encounter any technical difficulties with the Match Network Client, contact us immediately through Support for assistance.
Reporting Scores
At the conclusion of each of your matches, the team with the best in-game score over the course of the campaign is the winning team. At this point, please login again to the control panel on this site to report the score in the system.
You must report the score so that we know the match is completed and your team is still active in the competition.

Registration closes Thursday, Aug 6!
Time to get your team fully registered :)
why cant people from quebec play?
It's simply because of extremely strict contest regulations for Quebec residents mandated by the province.
will we have to take any ss of the players ids, final score, etc?
DEMOS are required. Any disputes on scoring will require SS's, so its best to take them during the match, or else you will have to watch your demos and take SS's that way.
Its also up to the teams to verify that the other team is utlizing rostered players, IE, status checks in-console. If a dispute arises, please take a SS of it. This means that if anybody leaves and rejoins, please verify that its the same person rejoing by status checks. We will not faulter a team for not having SS's, but if you do not have SS's to prove there was a ringer in, then we can not help you.
Alright cool and btw how do you take demos in l4d? Ive never done it with this game before.
Hey Nastry,
To record a demo you open your console by hitting ~
and then type in
record whatyouwanttocallit
I have a question regarding substitutions. If a teammate looses connection durning a match can we have a player fill in for the disconnected player. How does that work? Also who is responsible for recording demos and do we have to do demos for the entire match?
Gonna be awesome, thanks for the tourney.
TERRIBLE,
Any other player on the roster can connect to replace a disconnected player.
Everyone needs to record for the entire time they are playing.
I've read through the Rules and FAQs, but I still don't see if this tournament is single or double elimination. I just noticed that we already have 3 matches lined up, without even playing our first one. Even if you lose, do you continue to play those other 2 teams and so on?
Thanks.
Where do we report match wins?
Snacks,
It is group play. Your team is assigend to a group and you will play a match against every other team in your group. Then the top team from each group will advance to double-elim finals.

Thor667,
You can report the score through your control panel, or e-mail it to contact[at]alienwarearena.com
Is there anywhere where we can see either the current standings of all the teams or at least how we rank compared to other teams in our pool? I know week 1 matches are still going on, but was wondering if this was being planned for the near future?
How do we deal with a forfeit win? And wtf is the overtime feild for (please dont reply with "overtime")
BIOS
I was wondering the same thing as BIOS Hazard. What do we do about a forfeit. Our round 2 opponent has yet to respond and tonight is the deadline. How do we report a non responsive team and if they don't respond, a forfiet?
Adinar, yes being planned.
BIOS/Terrible - you can report a forfeit win by contacting support.
The overtime field exists in case of a draw score in the campaign match.
um i thought this tourney was single elimination until the playoffs. Why do we still keep getting new matches added?
Nasty,
It's group play in the opening phase, not single-elim.
