Alienware Arena hosts the NVIDIA Call of Duty: Black Ops Launch Tournament

North American online tournament features cash prizes sponsored by NVIDIA and Alienware

Join us in Alienware Arena for the NVIDIA Call of Duty: Black Ops Launch Tournament presented by NVIDIA and Alienware, Dell's premier, high-performance PC gaming brand representing premium power and performance for gamers and technology enthusiasts alike.

Gamers will form teams and compete from across the United States and Canada, starting January 17, 2011. Gamers can compete from participating LAN centers nationwide in a special LAN Division or from anywhere in the Online Division. Matches will take place through phases of double-elimination brackets, leading up to the Championships on March 24, 2011.

Success in battle will demand a broad range of tactics as teams compete across four game modes: Search & Destroy, Capture the Flag, Demolition and Domination. The winners will reap the spoils of war, a share of the cash prize pool of $1,500.00 USD.

Registration for the NVIDIA Call of Duty: Black Ops Launch Tournament is free and open now at http://www.alienwarearena.com/event/nvidia-blackops. Teams will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis while slots remain available, so don't delay!

You know, I would be totally down for this.. if they would patch the game so that I would be able to actually play it. I can run Crysis on max settings, but god forbid I try to play Black Ops on any settings at all.

Hopefully the patch comes out soon, and I'll most likely enter if it's still going on.

Push the envelope, watch it bend.

4 Modes? Sounds pretty lame. I could see SND and CTF...but Demo and Domination? It's already Meh if you ask me. Then I read on to see there isn't any restrictions.... What a facepalm. YAY perks and cheeseeeee

No thanks.

It would be nice if alienware had any connection to the community they are trying to connect with.  We don't like all the cheese pubber crap, it's not skill based, it's just DUMB.  Remove perks and killstreaks, and some of the attachments are just completely unacceptable.

Here come the stoner63 red dots / ak74 rapid fire squads....  I think I might be sick..

Please use a promod, this game has modtools for a reason. And yea, why 4 game modes and why all perks? Competitive matches SHOULD NOT be played like a pub. IMHO, a promod is a mandatory factor missing here. It's already in development and I'm sure it will become a standard amongst the competitive COD faithful. Alienware should really get in touch with the competitive community like Knighted said. If things are kept like this, this tournament will unfold to be a big JOKE. I'm hopeful that whoever is in charge of this tournament will get everything here straightened out.

Our Call of Duty staff for this event includes some of the scene's most talented and experienced players and administrators.

I'll let Ian Tannehill respond directly on your input.

knighted - perks will not be allowed. neither will equipment. attachments will with the exception of launchers/rockets. and of course killstreaks are going to be disabled too. after talking to lots of the top players in the community domination is an exciting mode to play. In fact currently s&d is the worrisome one.

apguy13- there currently is no modtools released for blackops. If there were we would edit a lot of things. The modtools you are talking about are actually "injectors" that get you vac banned in seconds, and we wouldn't want that. :)

Can you please post all of these details somewhere, like the rules for instance :) After reading the rules, anyone would have come to the conclusion that everything goes.

That being said, What of weapon restrictions, are we to assume that weapons like the stoner 63, are in competition. Also I hope you will reconsider the allowed attachment list. Rapid Fire causes some pretty severe balance issues on an already incredibly powerful weapon like that ak74.

Thanks for the quick updates guys, you had me really worried there. Now I'm only moderately disappointed.

Yeah, the stoner 63 is not allowed in competition. Its ridiculously overpowered. In addition rapid fire and grip are actually out as well. Fairly sure everything else is allowed.

The rules are constantly being updated, they now reflect perks and attachments and other restrictions.

In an ideal world we get mod tools soon and can actually customize and edit what we want out. But until then....

look over rule 7.6 and 10.2 for the highlights, I believe.

Thanks again for the updates Tannehill :) Sounds much better! Looks like my teams will definitely be involved in this one.  We all wish we could have mod tools, but I guess we have to wait for Heroes of Stalingrad to get a real PC shooter.

Please let us know when the alienware config is ready so we can start scrimming with your setup.

its 5v5.

Knighted - What team are you on? the famas hardly makes things easy mode. For that matter the aug is just as easy to use with less recoil. Every gun has checks and balances. We're not stripping out all the guns and bastardizing the game.

So exactly what are all the rules. I mean like what is allowed and not allowed? is it basically like a regualr match but just different game modes?
Will certain guns be banned from the matches? or certain perks/equipment?
