Hello everyone, I'm having a problem with my Alienware m17x-R2. I tried to play a game of Minecraft but all I got was lag. I than start to press the fn + f7 buttons and I got no response from it, and no indication on rather what graphics card I was running. Is there a reason for this? Different graphics card functionality or I perhaps updated to the wrong drive? I've looked up a trick that said to right-click the game of your choice and choose "Go to run with graphics processor: change default graphics processor. Many if not all Alienware machines should have this." But have not found the option to do so. Alienware m17xR2 Windows 7 Home Premium/64-bit OS BIOS A10 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q740 @ 1.73GHz 4GB RAM Chip Type: AMD Radeon Graphics processor ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5800 Series Please let me know if anymore information is needed.

Do you know your temps? Driver version?

Yes, the temperature is around 104 degrees Fahrenheit. During a game of Minecraft highest temperature was 119. A cooling fan is running at the moment. The driver version for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5800 Series is 12.104.0.0. Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q740 @ 1.73GHz is 6.1.7600.16385

Are you running a lot of mods on Minecraft? How many ATI 5800m do you have or what type/version you have (5850m or 5870m)? Plus, have you tried fn+f5?

No I am not, just running vanilla Minecraft. And that drive is the only one that I have. And for me, fn + f5 brings down the brightness, f4 brings it back up. Edit: I thought it was strange that you ask how many type/version of them that I had so I started searching and came across the driver and downloads page. I'm seeing 4 video files: nVidia 285M GTX, v.197.52, A00 AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4870, v.8.763-100810a-104118C-Dell, A01 AMD Mobility Radeon HD5870, v.13B96101.104, A01 AMD Mobility Radeon HD5870, v.8.763-100810a-104118C-Dell, A01 Most likely the AMD Mobility Radeons 4870-5870-5870/Dell is the ATI 5800 series, correct? And I check my entire Device Manager list, but wasn't able to find a trace of Nvidia tech. In fact, this is the first time I've seen anything about it. Checking a few more places on my computer, I was only able to find NVIDIA PhysX, which I didn't even know was on my computer.

Have you gotten lag from other games? Have you set everything to high performance? Charger plugged in?

Yes I've gotten lag from a few shooters and mmo's, but not as much. And yes, charger plugged in when playing them.

Might be that you don't have enough power (you might have a 5870m, but check in your BIOS) or the fact that you might have the wrong drivers. Uninstall every graphics driver (intel and AMD and Nvidia if by mistake) you have, then use CCleaner to clean up anything else. Download the intel driver first then AMD driver (best to go to dell's site for the intel driver).

There's a nVidia 285M GTX, v.197.52, A00 on the Dell drivers download I mentioned it above in an edited post, should that not be downloaded?

Nope.

That worked, thanks for the help. This was a long-overdue problem I've had. I appreciate you for providing the various suggestions until the dilemma was fixed.
