Monthly updates for Battlefield 1 are coming to an end

It has been more than a year and a half since DICE had taken us into the battles of the First World War in the latest Battlefield franchise. In that period of 18 months, the Swedish developer and affiliate of Electronic Arts has honored us with numerous DLC packages and updates that have brought a good amount of content with them. However, nothing is eternal.

Namely, DICE has explained in the blog post today that soon, in June, they intend to step out of the monthly releases for Battlefield 1, as the latest expansion Apocalypse is available for a while. But their schedule until then is booked, so expect some interesting new changes.

First of all, next month all maps from the first expansion They Shall Not Pass will be available to all owners of Battlefield 1 title. However, from today you can already try Rapture, which takes you to another battle at Marne; the last major German attack during the Spring offensive in 1918.

After that, in the sixth month we get a brand new mode called Shock Operations. It is a mode that supports up to 40 players who have to decide whether to fight on the side of the defender or the attacker. Globally, this is quite similar to Operations Mode, and the only difference is that the action is focused on only one map.

Shock Operations will be available on Giant's Shadow, Pride de Tahure, Lupkow Pass, Zeebrugge and River Somme maps. However, if you do not have a Premium Pass or some of the expansions that most of these maps are coming from, you do not have to despair because the game itself will be enough to get you into some of the battles at those locations when you try Shock Operations.

In any case, we knew that the time to say farewell to the monthly updates would sooner or later arrive because DICE is preparing a new Battlefield video game.

BF3 was still somewhat active even after BF4 was released.  That might have just been Metro 64-player servers though.
