Alienware 17 (2013) Gpu upgrade to gtx 970m

  • 0

Hello everybody

I currently own an Alienware 17 bought in 2013, with a gtx765m, intel i7-4700 CPU @2,4 ghz,a hd+ monitor 60hz(I guess, but i'm not sure) (1600x900), windows 7 home edition, BIOS A14. I wonder if it's possible to upgrade the gpu to a 970m without buying a more powerful PSU and the 3-pipe heatsink. I already read the mini-faq thread abuot upgrades, and it says that for the alienware 17 r1 (wich I guess is the model I own) the upgrade is possible. Has anyone actually done it and has some experience to share? Do I need to upgrade to windows 8.1 or 10 in order to make the new gpu work? Are there other things I should pay attention to when I replace the Gpu?

Thank you in advance for your patience and your answers

You need Win 8.1 and the rest is good. But Gtx970m is a good overclocker so if you want go that route buy a 240w psu and a 3 pipes heatsink. You need clean Uefi and not Legacy boot partision + mod drivers. Recommend DDU Uninstal to do a clean uninstall of drivers in safe mode(choose the new card option that turn off pc). Have everything ready for the change of gpu before you begin.

Is that still an issue now that we have a proper vbios available? Shouldn't he be able to flash to the Alienware vbios and run like normal?

edit: Please understand I am simply asking - as I have not done this yet to the m15x we switched over to the 970m. I was considering the flash, just to switch to normal drivers.

The Dell vBIOS only seems to be fine on the 18 R1 (makes sense since it supports it). The other laptops, not so much, although the tested laptops were the m17xR2 and the m18xR2.

I would stick with the Clevo vBIOS for now.

Alright, I think that this is all going to have to end up in a separate thread at some point, as many of the issues they are having I simply did not experience, or lack the understanding to prove out. Either the m15x was a masterpiece by Dell that left out many of their flaws, or some combination of it and the 970m was a thing of beauty. So much so, that it makes me cringe seeing what people are going through on these other machines.

m15x was a masterpiece by Dell :) but did not use locked InsydeH20 bios that are in later versions of Aw laptops. 2015 Aw15/17 laptops use nor InsydeH20 bios. Laptops from other brand does not have such problems with installing non-original gtx970 / 980m as it is with Aw 17/18. These are major changes from the past. Now there are other brands that are in front if we want to refresh our gaming laptops with non-original graphics...  It's pity that Aw becomes more and more hanging behind other brand. We have seen this over the past two years now.

Thank you Papusan and Game7a1 for your answers. I read in another thread here (https://eu.alienwarearena.com/forums/thread/93607/technical-support-1/alienware-17-r2-2015-components-real-power-consumption-vs-180w-psu-hyb-bios-240w-psu-330w-psu) that the 240 PSU is maybe not enough, at least for high end graphic cards like 780m or 980m. would it be better for me to buy a 330w psu in case I chose to overclock the 970m? Wich model exactly should i look for, either for 240w and 330w? Are these two good( 240w http://it.aliexpress.com/item/laptop-adapter-for-dell-19-5v-12-3a-240w-ac-adapter-330-4128-J211H-J938H-PA/32441073557.html?ws_ab_test=201556_6,201527_3_71_72_73_74_75,0_0

Are there negative consequences in  using a PSU more powerful than my strict necessities?

As regards the heatsink, wich model should I buy? is this one fine? (http://it.aliexpress.com/item/Original-YP26V-0YP26V-AT0UJ0090F0-For-Dell-AlienWare-M17X-R5-laptop-GTX-780M-880M-980M-Graphics-cards/32373731821.html?ws_ab_test=201556_6,201527_3_71_72_73_74_75,0_0

what is a vbios and how do i flash it to my laptop? Is there a complete guide to the whole process of upgrade I could follow?

You don't need a 330W PSU for your Aw17 setup with i7-4700mq and gtx970m. Not even if you overclock your processor/gpu... Choose the cheapest of 240W vs 330W psu. The best choice of psu is Delta. But Dell also deliver Flextronix PSU for Aw laptops. Delta is mostly used today for 330W psu. Regarding mod vbios and mod drivers then take a look at these threads I post for you. Join the forum if you want to upgrade to a new graphics card. Not particularly difficult once you've learned it. But start read and learn now. Enjoy it :)
