That's why Zenimax does not consider The Elder Scrolls Online for MMO

  • 29

Game-director Zenimax Online Studios Matt Firor said that the company no longer believes that The Elder Scrolls Online is a representative of the genre of MMO. According to the developer, this genre is outdated and TESO has nothing to do with it.

MMO is Ultima Online, EverQuest and Dark Age of Camelot. Our game is not like that.

According to the developers, the game has long been more like The Elder Scrolls. Firor said that the developers have removed the levels, allowing beginners to play with veterans without any problems. The game became more open and similar to RPG.

There are no systems and frameworks limiting the enjoyment [of the game].

Firor also said that the developers have made tremendous progress since the release of the game. They improved the game technically and added tons of content that allow players to disappear in TESO for hours. But the main achievement of the game director is the ability to play with friends and immerse himself in the world of Tamriel in a pleasant campaign, and not alone, as was the case in the series The Elder Scrolls.

To which genre Zenimax refers his child, Matt Fior did not say.

Sounds a bit pretentious. A genre can evolve and have multiple different facets to it. Just look at how many different kinds of computer "RPGs"there are: Diablo, Baldur's Gate, Mass Effect, etc.

Interesting point of view...

Never played The Elder Scrolls online though. I don't really like MMO nowadays, but used to play it a lot some years ago. Tibia, Priston Tale, Ragnarok and the list goes on and on...

I agree it's pretentious.  Are there a lot of people playing online at any given point?  It's a MMO game.  Does it have considerable role-playing elements?  It's a MMORPG.  "They improved the game technically and added tons of content that allow players to disappear in TESO for hours."  WoW did that too a long while back - and it was a MMORPG.

"According to the developers, the game has long been more like The Elder Scrolls."  I honestly would be surprised if The Elder Scrolls Online was not like The Elder Scrolls.  But points for making that happen.

Well, nitpicking over - I do plan on getting this at some point anyway when I have more time!  It always looked fun to play around with after they got past the initial release.

Is it online only? Is it multiplayer only? Does it support a massive concurrent playerbase? Yes? It's an MMO.
